‼️ MODERATE RISK (LEVEL 4/5) issued TODAY for SIGNIFICANT SEVERE THREAT this afternoon through the overnight with storms capable of producing MULTIPLE STRONG TO INTENSE TORNADOES 🌪️ (EF2–EF3+), VERY LARGE HAIL 🧊 (2–3”+ possible), and DAMAGING WINDS 💨.
The SPC has upgraded parts of the Midwest to a Level 4 – MODERATE RISK (Tornado Driven), highlighting increasing confidence in a localized strong tornado potential across north-central Illinois into northwest Indiana, where multiple strong to intense tornadoes 🌪️ (EF2–EF3+) are possible. The timeframe for this is around 3pm CST onward into the overnight!
➡️ MIDWEST / SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES (PRIMARY TORNADO CORRIDOR – MODERATE RISK)
The greatest tornado threat will likely develop this afternoon and evening from northern and central Illinois into northwest Indiana as a surface low tracks northeast from Kansas along a frontal boundary.
A strengthening low-level jet, combined with strong instability and wind shear, will create a very favorable environment for supercells capable of producing strong to intense tornadoes 🌪️ (EF2–EF3+).
VERY LARGE HAIL 🧊 (2+ inches) will also be possible with initial supercells. Later this evening, storms may grow into clusters or lines, but the threat for TORNADOES and DAMAGING WINDS 💨 will likely continue eastward into the Ohio Valley overnight.
➡️ TEXAS INTO OKLAHOMA
Storms are expected to develop along the dryline across west Texas by mid to late afternoon as a strong upper disturbance moves out of northern Mexico.
Initial supercells may produce VERY LARGE HAIL 🧊 (2–3+ inches) before storms transition into clusters or a squall line, bringing an increasing DAMAGING WIND THREAT 💨 into the evening across central Texas and southern Oklahoma.
Some embedded tornadoes 🌪️ will also be possible, especially where moisture and wind shear are stronger across central Texas.
➡️ OKLAHOMA / KANSAS INTO THE MID-MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
Additional storms may develop this evening along a cold front sagging south through Kansas and Missouri. Any sustained supercells could produce TORNADOES 🌪️ and LARGE HAIL 🧊, while storms organizing into line segments may bring DAMAGING WINDS 💨 as they spread east overnight.
⏱️ THE TIMEFRAME
• Afternoon: Storm development begins across Texas and parts of the Midwest
• Late Afternoon–Evening: Supercells capable of strong to intense tornadoes and very large hail
• Evening–Overnight: Storms grow into clusters/lines with damaging winds
⚠️ BOTTOM LINE: A significant severe weather outbreak appears likely today, especially across northern/central Illinois into northwest Indiana, where multiple strong to intense tornadoes are possible.
⚠️ Have a plan today and tonight.
