Perfumeballs- why that common name?
They smell amazing.
Perfumeballs, Gaillardia suavis, are a longer lived perrenial than other Gaillardias, like Blanketflower.
They lack the daisy rays, or ray florets, of other Gaillardias. But they look like lollipops or mini truffula trees, and in my opinion smell better than any other flowers.

They can thrive in occasionally mowed areas, due to their basal low lying leaves.
They like lots of sun and well drained, more dry soil.

I should have some available by next month.

Want a native, walkable and mowable groundcover for dry shady areas?
When most people think of shady groundcover, they think of the non-native water sucking fescue.

Carex leavenworthii Leavenworth's Sedge
A native sedge, it looks like grass, but is a relative. It prefers shade, and is very drought and moisture tolerant.
I should have some available this fall and next spring.
OSU, Oklahoma State University, determined it as one of the best sedges for a shade turf.

Despite the cold, we got Liatris pycnostachya, Prairie Blazingstar, germinating en masse.
A heated greenhouse allows the seasons to be manipulated, so maybe some perrenials can flower first year!
Looks to be a healthy fungal community in the soil too!

Western White Honeysuckle, Lonicera albiflora, is the only bush honeysuckle native to Oklahoma.
It should be in cultivation more, as it puts on a great show in spring and fall, and is not an agresive vine.

For I got a whole bunch of compost from Minick Materials! Personal composting will never be enough to make all the potting soil I need!

Out topsoil across the country has been plowed, sterilized, and here in Oklahoma it all blew away in the dust bowl! Better agricultural practices have shown that it is possible to rebuild soil while still turning a profit. We need to manage the soil now, so we don't lose our ability to feed ourselves!

Zanthoxylum clava-hercules, the Toothache tree, or Hercules Club, is a small tree in the citrus family, Rutaceae. Like most members of that family, it is a host for the Giant Swallowtail butterfly!
As I await a trip to the dentist next week, I wish I had a mature tree, as the bark helps numb a toothache, and tastes quite good too. These medicinal qualities have been used by southeast tribes for thousands of years.

Salvia azurea, Giant Blue Sage, is a great early fall bloomer. Mature plants reach up to about 4 ft, but are not too dense so they dont shade much.
They are edible, but do not have the aroma or flavor of cultivated sage, so perhaps let the bees have at it.

Vernonia lettermannii, the threadleaf ironweed, is a narrow endemic to the greater Ouachita ecoregion, the Ouachita mountains and Arkansas river valley uplands. It grows along creeks and rivers, where it can get a little more sun.
Hoping to have a tray next spring!
