Insert: lemons to lemonade cliche. A few weeks ago that winter storm brought some heavy snow! Heavy enough to take down a pretty large white pine tree.
Fortunately no major damage. It uprooted midway through my fence project (easy fix) and just kissed the neighbors house.
Cleanup was a bit of a bitch, but the limbs made for some pretty nice material. Couldn’t let it go to waste! I’d been prepping the soil in this area to expand my garden since last summer (and just like that I’m under budget 😎)

ATTENTION! Honey sale for a good cause!

One of my oldest and dearest friends Bruce Carpenter and his beautiful family could use a boost, and here is a great way to help out.

On January 11th, Bruce’s wife Allison (Cortinovis) Carpenter suffered a severe stroke and has a long road to recovery ahead. (You can find some more detail and link to a Go Fund Me on my page).

Another way to help out (and if you happen to enjoy honey), please read along for details on an online honey sale I am offering. Please bear with me as my process will be a work-in-progress!

1. I am starting out with a minimum order of $50. For $50 you will receive 5 pounds of SE PA locally foraged and bottled spring/early summer honey.

2. If you wish to order more, please just send a message how much $ you would like to donate. I generally ask $10/lb but am willing to offer bulk discounts.

3. The price you pay will include the shipping. 100% of the remainder will go directly to the Carpenters.

4. I prefer Venmo payment if possible, but will accept checks/cash through the mail.

5. To place an order, just send me a message with what you’d like to order and your address. I will provide a Venmo link (or my address), and will ship to you within 1-3 days of payment. I’ll send a tracking number once it’s dropped off.

6. I bottle in 1, 2, and 3 pound bottles. If you have a preference, include in your message the proportion of each (for example: “please send one 2-lb and 3 1-lb bottles; 5 pound order”). If you do not specify, I will just send your total order in some mix of (mostly 1-lb) bottles.

That’s about it friends. If you have any questions, please just send me a message. Feel free to like/share to help spread the word. My IG and FB page go by The Buzzed Gardener - you can also find my personal page (Derek Pruyne) where I originally posted. You can message me through any of these 3 accounts.

I appreciate all of you, and I will post updates along the way! Check my comments for additional info as I think of it.

baby! Putting my surplus to use, I’ve bottled my first (3) batches of mead!
First up, 5 gallons of straight mead (honey only) with a champagne yeast. This MF is dry and needs some time to condition. This was a long, slow ferment of nearly 7 months!
Next, a traditional “cyser” (honey + apple). I dropped a cinnamon stick for about 24 hrs before bottling, and used a hard cider yeast. It’s younger, sweeter, and pretty darn good even before conditioning.
Finally, a pretty special batch of mead. A melomel (fruit mead) using a very unique native fruit - groundcherry. Still harvestable in December, these little gems have a flavor that reminds me of strawberry + tomato. I pressed them for juices for both primary and secondary fermentation, and I’m delighted with how it tastes, even young and unconditioned.

Wisteria. A vine that produces beautifully fragrant, cascading blooms in the spring. But watch out, as this invasive specimen can become a major problem in the wrong setting and if left unchecked.
Wisteria is a climber and can quickly steal canopy real estate. This can not only directly weaken a tree’s resource sequestration ability, but can also leave a tree susceptible to wind or ice/snow damage.
In the fall, we should exercise some restraint cleaning up our green spaces. Leaves/stems/senesced plant material is critical for native flora and fauna overwintering success. But any energy spent targeting nonnative invasives is energy well spent.
This massive white pine may not be able to express thanks, but I’d like to think we share a mutual gratitude for one another.

Aaah the colors of … these side by sides are so fun for me, as each honey harvest brings different colors (and flavors) to the table.
Pictured are distinct extractions from May, June, July, and August (‘22) respectively.
Stay tuned - with over 300 pounds in the bucket and more on the way, I’ll be shortly gearing up for some summer honey sales 👀
