Inishowen Farms You are all welcome to enjoy the fresh air and open areas of our sales yard. Inishowen Farms is owned and operated by Mark & Tammy Doherty.

We grow our perennials without the benefit of man-made heat. In other words, some of the cuttings begin life inside one of our two greenhouses but are only heated by the warmth of the sun. These plants are moved outdoors at the earliest possible time, to be sure they are cold-toughened and ready for your garden.

"New Hampshire Purple" perennial geranium. A profusion of flowers atop compact, spreading mounds of leaves makes this one of the best low-growing hardy geraniums.
Intricately cut leaves are green for most of the season but earn their namesake from the brilliant crimson-red they turn in fall.
This species is so adapatable that it handles both hot summer and cold winter climates with ease.

Spiderwort 'Concord Grape'
'Concord Grape' blossoms with sulphur yellow stamens. Each 1½" wide, 3-petaled flower only lasts for one day, but the plants have lots of buds, extending the bloom time up to eight weeks. The flowers are self-cleaning, so deadheading is not necessary.

This cultivar has frosted blue-green foliage which remains compact, making it attractive both in bloom and out.

Hosta 'Sum and Substance'
Easily grown in evenly moist, organically rich, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Best in part shade (some morning sun or sun dappled conditions). Established plants have some tolerance for dry shade (particularly plants with thick leaves), but soils should never be allowed to dry out. Full size and quality form are best achieved with consistent moisture. Water is best applied directly to the soil beneath the leaves. Divide plants as needed in spring or autumn. Division is usually easiest in early spring before the leaves unfurl. Plant in locations protected from wind. Hostas are generally considered to be low-maintenance perennials.

Butter Bowl Peony
The 'Butter Bowl' peony is a Japanese-style herbaceous perennial featuring a single, outer ring of smooth, rosy-pink petals that fade to pastel as the flower matures. These petals form a graceful bowl that cradles a dense, sunburst-like tuft of narrow, golden-yellow petaloids in the center.

Scabiosa columbaria 'Pink Mist'
Best grown in light, medium moisture, well-drained soils with a neutral pH in full sun. Good drainage is the key to growing this plant well. Allow soils to dry between waterings. Plants tend to rot in wet, poorly drained soils. Particularly intolerant of wet soils in winter, and benefits from a light, dry winter mulch. Best performance is in cool summer climates such as the Pacific Northwest. Plants are generally intolerant of high heat and humidity.

While loading the truck this morning, an eagle landed on the fence next to Mark. The bird looked up and made a noise, apparently to the juvenile eagle flying overhead. Then the juvenile plunged down and just missed catching a rabbit. The older bird "squawked" at the younger one (all parents can understand!!). As they flew away, the adult eagle's wings brushed Mark!! Extraordinary wildlife here!!
(this picture is obviously from AI - I did not have a camera ready to catch images of the real thing!)

Silphium perfoliatum Cup flowers
Commonly called cup plant, is a coarse, sunflower-like, Missouri native plant which occurs in open, low woods and thickets, wet meadows and prairies, stream/pond peripheries and along railroad tracks in the Midwest and portions of the southern United States. It typically grows on tough, erect stems to 4-8' tall and is distinguished from the other silphiums by its square/quadrangular stems and pairs of cup-forming leaves. Flower heads (to 3" diameter) featuring light yellow rays (20-40) and darker yellow center disks bloom in summer on the upper part of the plant. Rough, triangular to ovate, coarsely-toothed, opposite, connate-perfoliate, medium green leaves can reach 14" long. The leaf pairs are united at their bases, enveloping the stems. perfoliatum Cup flowers.

Ligularia Britt-Marie Crawford
Best grown in rich, humusy, medium to wet soils in part shade to full shade in a location sheltered from winds. Must have moist soils that never dry out. Benefits from a regular, deep watering in hot summers. Site selection in hot summer climates can be a bit tricky because leaves tend to show wilt when grown in hot sun and flower spikes tend to grow on a slant toward brighter light when grown in shade. Probably best in partially shaded (afternoon shade) or dappled shade locations in climates with hot, humid summers.
