Happy new year! At Terra Bella Garden Center, we're all excited for the new growing season.

In our Lowcountry climate, the start of the new year is a great time to plan and prepare for the coming Spring. Think about new projects you may want to check off your list this year. While you’re still inside, dust off your houseplants; dust can clog “pores'' in leaves, blocking light and air. If you notice frost damage on your outdoor plants, leave their foliage alone. New growth in the spring will indicate that it’s time to prune. Now is also a great time to plant camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, and cold season annuals like snapdragons.

Plant of the Week: Fatsia japonica
Also called Paperplant or Japanese Aralia, fatsias are
tropical plants that make a bold statement in gardens,
containers, or as a houseplant. Native to Japan, this
plant features huge, deeply lobed leaves that range
from 6 to 14 or more inches wide. It can reach a height
of 6 to 10 feet and width of 6 to 10 feet. Older plants in
ideal conditions may even reach 15 feet tall. White
flowers bloom in clusters in fall and last several weeks.
The flowers produce black berries in mid to late winter
that attract birds.
For best results, keep fatsias in rich, moist soil under
partial to full shade. Growth will be slower in full sun
and dry soil. Fatsias are adaptable, and able to tolerate
Lowcountry winters with minimal issues.
If you could use a beautiful and unique addition to your
garden or houseplant collection, Terra Bella has
Fatsias on sale through this week!

Plant of the Week: Podocarpus
The podocarpus is a unique evergreen shrub that requires little care. Its adaptability and low maintenance needs makes it an excellent choice for a statement plant, hedge, or even a trained specimen like a bonsai. Podocarpus are also hardy to the Lowcountry’s climate, making them an easy pick for many landscape environments.
Care: Plant Podocarpus under full to partial sun in well-draining soil. Water regularly during the first year to help your plant establish itself in its new environment. After the first year, your plant will be hardy and drought tolerant. Podocarpus are also not prone to any problems like pests or disease, but if you see leaves turning brown on it, give it a good soak with plenty of water. Prune dead and damaged branches as needed.

Plant of the Week: Sunshine Ligustrum
Sunshine Ligustrum is a unique evergreen shrub that sports golden yellow foliage year round. It’s commonly used as a hedge, border, or background for more plants. It thrives in full sun and stands up to the heat in even the hottest climates. It does not produce flowers, making it a good choice for people with allergies. It is also very hardy and easy to care for, perfect for busy people and those with little gardening experience.
Care: Plant Sunshine Ligustrum in full sun and well-drained soil. Water frequently for the first few weeks to help the plant get established in its new environment. Once established, these shrubs are drought and heat tolerant. Pruning is not needed beyond trimming off dead or damaged branches.
Sunshine Ligustrum are discounted this week, making now the perfect time to get some for your own garden!

Plant of the Week: Zinnia
Zinnias thrive in hot sunny climates, making them a great choice for Lowcountry gardens. They are fast-growing warm season annuals that bloom frequently in a wide variety of colors.
Care: These plants can handle essentially any growing conditions as long as they are in full sun. They don’t even need supplemental watering once established, and are very drought tolerant.
Terra Bella Garden Center will have zinnias on sale through the end of this week, so now is the perfect time to check out these gorgeous low-maintenance flowering plants!

Plant of the Week: Rose of Sharon
Rose of Sharon is a perennial hibiscus species that produces large, colorful blooms during the spring and fall. The species features a wide range of flower color, and they are about three inches in diameter. They grow to 8-12 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide when mature, and can be pruned into a tree form.
Care: Plant Rose of Sharon under full sun in well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Prune off any dead or damaged branches after freezes or other damage.
Terra Bella Garden Center currently has two color varieties in stock; Blue Chiffon (pictured above) and Pink Chiffon. They both feature double blooms with dark throats.

The popularity of butterfly bushes is no surprise; these deciduous shrubs are low-maintenance, hardy, and still gorgeous. Their clusters of flowers are known for attracting pollinators and beneficial insects. They thrive in difficult conditions and are resistant to pests and disease.
Care: Butterfly bushes need at least 6 hours of direct sun every day and enough water to keep the soil moist. If planting multiple bushes in one spot, space them out by about 5 to 6 feet. Prune annually to contain growth and stimulate blooming.

Plant Showcase: Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas have a wide variety of flower color and form to choose from, making them an excellent choice for many different garden settings. These fast-growing perennial shrubs are hardy to the Lowcountry’s climate and resist most pest and disease issues.
Care: Hydrangeas do best in full sun or partial shade, depending on the variety. They need plenty of moisture during the growing season, so water deeply about twice a week through spring and summer. Hydrangeas will lose their leaves when the weather cools down for fall and go dormant through the winter. Prune any cold-damaged branches.

Plant of the Week: Coleus
Coleus was a popular bedding plant during the Victorian era, but has recently made a comeback due to its wide range of foliage colors that stay all season long. These annual plants quickly reach their full size in one season, leaving a quilt-like appearance in garden beds, containers, and hanging baskets.
Care: Sun exposure needs differ based on variety, but all coleus prefer moist, well-drained soil and plenty of water. Coleus loves heat and humidity, making it a good choice for the Lowcountry. Some gardeners prefer to pinch off the insignificant flowers that grow in the summer in order to get the plant to spend more energy on growing foliage, but it is not required.
If coleus may be a good fit for you, they are on sale from now through Saturday!
