Should a homeowner need this many approvals just to improve their own property?
In Massachusetts, even a fairly straightforward renovation or addition can involve a long list of requirements before construction ever begins zoning review, building permits, inspections, energy-code requirements, structural engineering, septic or Title 5 considerations, conservation restrictions, setbacks, and sometimes additional town approvals depending on the property.
Most of these requirements are there for good reasons, especially when it comes to safety, protecting neighboring properties, and making sure homes are built correctly.
But for homeowners, the process can still feel overwhelming when all they’re trying to do is improve the home they already own.
Between the paperwork, added costs, design changes, and waiting for approvals, sometimes the hardest part of a renovation happens before construction even starts.
Do you think Massachusetts has the right balance, or could the process be made a little easier for homeowners?
