They also benchmarked the first resealable tin paint can for consumers! Prior to that paints were started with an oil and water base with added ingredients such as lead, ground shells, iron, coffee, rice, eggs, fruits, berries and other vegetation to create different colors. This mixture required extensive hand grinding to create a smooth liquid substance that was much thicker than today’s paints. By the mid 1800s Linseed oil became the new binding agent for pigment and machines for grinding color were invented. Linseed oil is cheap and provided an added bonus of protecting wood. Benjamin Moore began competing with Sherwin Williams by 1890 by financing research to improve color mixing and production. In 1982 Benjamin Moore patented the first computer based color matching system that we all use today.

I find going with lighter colors for your walls with hints of blue, green, or yellow provides a clean, balanced, calming and uplifting look. The powerful and energetic colors are better used in smaller decorative accents in pillows, bedspreads and art.

The devil is in the details and it does not exclude paint finishes! Here’s a guide so you can avoid picking the perfect color only to realize once it has dried it is too shiny or matte finish for the room. 😱
Low ceilings: Eggshell
High ceilings: Flat
Walls: Eggshell or Satin
Trim: Semi Gloss
Bathroom Ceilings: Eggshell or Satin
