Method Matters Method is the distillation of a lifetime of designing, problem solving, and building. Method is her current arena for that ongoing exploration.

In Method, founder Deb Paine pours her best into her absolute favorite and most valuable skills: bespoke residential kitchen & cabinet design, very selective construction projects, and (most fun) consulting with owners on interesting and challenging construction projects. For her, it's about working on the sweetest projects with clients who want to engage in a creative process that looks deeper &

pushes further in search of perfected imperfection. Deb has spent her life always looking around the corner for the next neat idea or problem to solve, the unexplored beach, the design challenge that makes her look past the obvious solutions toward nuance and invention. Her solutions come from unexpected places, during a workshop wood project or while on a walk on the beach. One such project has been the creation of her own line of hand-made, high-grade wooden cabinetry. Something that meets the needs of quality and requirements for beauty. So in talking about creating truly customized spaces, there really is nothing quite like a Method Kitchen. From the floor to the ceiling, this bright and airy kitchen is full of all the right details, including our own Method line of cabinetry. With years of experience, Method has an extensive career to show for designing and building high end homes and kitchens. From this experience came knowledge, and out of that knowledge a specific vision for cabinetry was born and created. Determining what you want and need in a kitchen goes deeper than just answering the questions of, "What color cabinets would look best?" "What kind of fixtures should be put in?" Go below the surface and ask yourself, "What do I want to feel when I am in this space?" "What memories do I want to create?" "When people are over, what is the tone I want it to convey?" Really pause, and take the time to process through those thoughts. Properly communicating those wants and needs to the contractor is crucial. That's why I speak "builder" for you.

This bold, blue, geometric tile was all thanks to Urban Dwellings in Portland, Maine. Tucked in between the walls, this bar area was a phenomenal transitional space. Located in a neutrally designed room, this pop of color really showcased the clean and simple space, while also maintaining rich personality. Like I always say, my first goal on any project is to have fun, and collaborating with Urban Dwellings to bring this client's concepts to life was exactly that!

There's a reason that the method you use to achieve an outcome matters. Designing a space is fun, but creating something together is life-giving. Our method works because unless you truly listen to a person's desires, you'll never be able to satisfy the vision they have. Sometimes, it's hearing the things that aren't actually being said, that make a space so spectacular. It's the little details, the personal touches, it's sharing and telling the story of who you are. From a gold faucet, to the carefully chosen countertops, to the light fixture and intentionally chosen window panels.

The kitchen - it's where hard conversations are had, where major life events are celebrated, where grief and comfort are shared, where people from all seasons of life can come together and become one through a meal, a snack, or maybe just a drink. So much life is lived in this one space, it's crucial to be intentional with both the functionality and the aesthetics to create a kitchen you enjoy cooking in, but more so, a kitchen you enjoy living in. These sleek cabinets really complete this space, tying the whole room together. Designed to be both functional, and pleasing to the eye, this kitchen will be well lived in.

There are those who can dream and those who can actualize. But combining both components is what will lead to spaces that have purpose. When I take on a new project, it's like I've just been given a blank canvas, and you are my muse. I study you, I hear every detail you desire to see, even the ones you didn't know you needed. After carefully and methodically choosing what brushes and colors to use, my goal is to present you with a masterpiece - the very space you dreamed of, the kitchen you built in your mind but better, now right in front of you. The kitchen where you'll laugh and cry, where friends and family will come together, where memories will be made.

When I meet with my clients, I ask a lot of questions. It may seem a bit much at first, but I believe good questions make good beginnings. This process is what helps me define what things are truly essential to each client, and what are more-so a desire. Both are important, but budgets are a reality and sometimes you may have to say goodbye to one of those desires to make sure the needs happen. Problems may arise, but for every problem, the process of finding a solution is where those unexpected delights arise, things we wouldn't have even thought to put on the "wish list."

Making. A true moment of delight - this is what everyone is searching for, and this is what we're here to create. Method is nothing without a great team of like minded kitchen and construction specialists to work with. It doesn't matter if it’s a carpenter, an engineer, an environmental consultant or the right plumber. The real recipe for great work is a great team. To bring life to your dreams, I start by really listening to you, hanging on to your every word, to fully understand what it really is that you want in a space. From there, I take your thoughts and words, and those dreams begin to take shape in the form of dimensions, colors, materials.

Translating. You've got your dream, you've envisioned what you hope to achieve, now let's refine it and translate what you see in your mind on to paper. When I begin sketching and designing, I don't just look at the now, I look months down the road. What possible obstacles might arise? How can we solve those issues? This may all be new territory for you, with questions you'd never even considered. From planning to zoning, to dimensions and function, I love using knowledge and experience to come alongside you and chart the course to completion and enjoyment.
