Taylor Ceramics Handmade porcelain wares - for home and table

Taylor Ceramics is the effort of artist Cara Taylor, with focus on the exploration of beauty and design through form. Combining the methods of wheel throwing, slab construction, slip casting and hand drawn decoration, Taylor makes pieces that are simple and functional. Whether one of a kind or slip cast reproductions, Taylor seeks to create unique wares that retain the organic qualities of the clay itself.

This is the littlest piece in the show up at
coming in at just over 4 inches tall. As much as I have been enjoying working on a larger scale, I still love the intimacy of small objects. The gallery is open today through Sunday.

These pieces combine a lifelong love of textiles, patterns and stitchwork on knitwear, quilts and embroideries. Recent classes in basket weaving sparked a desire to create my own version of stakes and weavers. With over twenty years of making functional pottery, working with clay gave me the technical framework to re-imagine the traditional coil pot, one that is integrated with a rhythmic, stitch-by-stitch construction to create strength, texture, and intricate surface designs.

I’m (literally) tying up all the loose ends on this latest collection of woven vessels in preparation for my show at which opens this Saturday, April 4th.

These cylindrical forms are constructed of pinched rings of clay (see previous post) that get stacked and tied together after firing. The texture is subtle and each one is imperfectly round creating a gentle undulation to the form’s contour. Because of the wavering edge, the lines of vertical thread remind me of the puckered running stitch on a quilt. So many of my experiences with stitch work have influenced the making of these vessels.

I was building fine motor skills and muscle memory which now allow me to create more instinctively. I’m looking forward to stitching all these together.

The second event is the annual and I will be a guest of in Florence on the weekend of April 25-26. The line up of potters this year is extraordinary, like always.
