UC Marin Master Gardeners The UC Master Gardener Program is an example of an effective partnership between the University of California division and passionate volunteers.

UC Marin Master Gardeners are dedicated to extending research-based knowledge and information on home horticulture, pest management, and sustainable landscape practices to Marin residents. Since 1981, the University of California Master Gardener Program has been extending UC research based information about home horticulture and pest management to the public. The UC Master Gardener Program is a pu

blic service and outreach program under the University of California division of Agriculture and Natural Resources administered locally by participating UC Cooperative Extension county offices. In exchange for training from the University of California, Master Gardeners offer volunteer services and outreach to the general public. With programs based in 50 California counties and 6,048 active members - University of California Master Gardener volunteers donated 385,260 hours last year and have donated more than 4.2 million hours! Agave parryi v. truncata / Artichoke agave

Agave parryi v. truncata has a dense symmetrical form, wide blue-grey leaves. Individual plants grow to 3' x 3'. Accepts full sun or light shade. This is a great plant for a container taking several years to bloom. Does form offsets after blooming. This is one of the most attractive forms with leaves up to 5" wide and 12" long and bright blue in color. Widely adaptable to soils and exposures. Susceptible to weevils. Native to Mexico. Frost tolerant to 10F. Also know as Agave patonii.

This textured white pot serves up a smorgasbord of mouth-watering succulents for a Plant Collector. The uncommon Aloe suprafoliata, with its 2-dimensional stacked leaves, is backed by Crassula ovata ‘Ogre’s Ear’ and Aeonium ‘Zwartzop’. In the foreground, Euphorbia flanangii, silvery Caputia scaposa, trailing Crassula ‘Baby’s Necklace’ and String of Bananas (Senecio radicans) surround the variegated tones of an Aenoium ‘Kiwi’.

The kitchen sink overflows with an exuberant collection of succulents sporting the fresh colors of Springtime. On one side of the faucet, fresh green Aeonium haworthii and lavender Kalanchoe pumila are paired with pink and red-blushed echeverias, and on the other side, purple aloes, Sedum adolphii, and haworthiopis mingle with trailing Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’. The water flow from the faucet is evoked with a dusting of sparkling white safety glass.

A Greek goddess wears a crown of succulents to welcome the coming of Spring. Echeveria elegans, Aeonium Sunburst, Aeonium leucoblepharum, and Echeveria ‘Perle von Nurnberg’ form a fitting tribute to the pastel tones of Springtime. Trailing String of Tears (Senecio herreianus) drapes over her eyes, like a diaphanous veil.

While some like it hot, this white pot with its succulents in shades of blues and greens is all about being cool. Shades of blue are provided by ruffly Echeveria ‘Topsy Turvy’, fuzzy Kalanchoe tomentosa, and flower-shaped Graptosedum ‘Ghosty’. Tall Portulacaria afra forms a backdrop to a slightly chartreuse Echeveria agavoides, deep green Sempervivum and trailing Curio citrformis. But being cool also means not taking yourself too seriously. Can you spot the surprising non-plant visitor amongst the greenery?

Let your succulents grow into the mass that they want to enjoy an easy to take care of garden. Left to their own devices, Agave bracteosa (Squid agave) will form multiple pups at the base of the mother plant. The strap like leaves will overlap each other, forming a delightful sculptural mass. Aeonium ‘Blushing Beauty’, with their rounded leaves and many heads starting to bloom, contrasts with the thinner, recurved leaves of the agave. In the background are fine-leafed Curio vitalis and mounds of blue-green Lampranthus deltoides and bright green Sedum rubrotinctum. Three Dudleya brittonii add punch with their ice-blue coloring.

A classic white urn with a bas-relief of grapes and grape leaves sports a classically beautiful arrangement with black Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop' holding center stage and supported by blue-green Graptosedum 'Darley Sunshine' and Echeveria elegans, variegated Sedum takesimense 'Atlantis' and trailing green Sedum album. In the background, the thin flower stems of Crassula platyphylla 'Burgundy' are just beginning to bud.
