Congratulations to our partners at The City of Treasure Island, Florida, on receiving the Community Service & Engagement Award at the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council's 32nd Annual Future of the Region Awards! πŸ‘

The award recognizes a project that created 500 linear feet of living shoreline, enhanced 1,800 linear feet of seawall, improved resiliency through elevated pedestrian access, and expanded community access to the water with a new kayak launch and boardwalk.

We're proud to have played a role in a project that benefits both people and the environment. πŸ™Œ

Not only does the ocean cover over 70% of the Earth, but it's an essential life source for both humanity and all organisms on our planet, making it essential that we help keep it in tip-top shape. 🌊

Today, we celebrate World Oceans Day by highlighting our favorite resource that helps make our ocean water clean: seagrass! 🌱

These tiny plants have a lot of water restoration power by keeping carbon out of the atmosphere, making the water clean and healthy for humans and animals to thrive in.

Skipping work to go boating today? We won't tell. πŸ˜‰

But if you're celebrating Boater Skip Day in the St. John's River, we do have one favor to ask: Please boat responsibly.

Sponsored by North Florida Land Trust and the State of Florida, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, our teams have been planting seagrass to enhance the St. Johns River. Seagrass plays a vital role in improving water quality, supporting fisheries, and protecting our shorelines, and we need your help to preserve these efforts.

Here are a few guidelines you can follow to ensure you are doing your part. ⬇️

πŸ“ Stay in marked channels
🌊 Watch your depth
🌱 Avoid seagrass beds
βš“ Anchor responsibly
🐟 Respect wildlife

We wish you a safe day on the water!

Our restoration process in action: extract the muck, filter the water, and plant native grasses to keep the lake healthy in the long term. We’re working to ensure that Lake Okeechobee remains a thriving ecosystem for generations to come. 🌊🌱

It's National Fish and Boating Week! And with summer upon us, we can't wait to go on nice boat rides. However, we need to take a few precautions when out in the water to help keep our seagrass beds growing and intact:

🌿 Be aware of excess pesticides and fertilizers from your lawns, which can drain into the nearby water.
🌿 Make sure you know your boating signals and depths of water before heading out.
🌿 Study your navigational charts, fishing maps, or local boating guides before you navigate any waterway.
🌿 And most importantly, make sure you're not blocking their sunlight for extended amounts of time with your dock or boat.
🌿 Read the waters by wearing polarized sunglasses when boating to reduce surface glare and see shallow areas and seagrass beds.

Keeping these items in mind will help maintain our beautiful seagrass for many years!

POV: our local birds flying over the new shoreline at Treasure Bay! πŸ¦…

In partnership with the City of Treasure Island, approximately 500 linear feet of living shoreline was created, along with an additional 1,800 linear feet of seawall enhancement. This project will not only enhance the area's look but also improve water quality and habitat in the two existing golf course ponds.

Don't worry: the grass will return to its usual green in the near future!

Our state's identity is deeply rooted in our waterways. 🌊

When our aquatic ecosystems suffer, Florida's environment, wildlife, and communities feel the impact. Read this article by our Environmental Advisor, Josie Wittling, to learn more about the importance of protecting our waterways and our work here at Sea & Shoreline.
