We’re proud to share that the first six homes we designed in the Africatown neighborhood have been completed! Several have already sold, while others are actively on the market.

This phase includes two thoughtfully designed housing types: the traditional “Shotgun” and the “Wide House,” an historic home design that was developed in the Africatown neighborhood. By drawing from these established vernacular types, the homes reflect the architectural language of the community while providing modern, durable spaces designed for long-term living. The goal was to create new construction that feels rooted in place — respectful of history while supporting future growth.

Africatown, founded by formerly enslaved West Africans who arrived aboard the Clotilda in 1860, is a community of profound cultural and historical significance. Established by survivors who built their own neighborhood, institutions, and traditions, Africatown remains a powerful testament to resilience, heritage, and self-determination. It has been an honor to contribute to ongoing efforts that support reinvestment in this remarkable place.

Each of the six homes in this first phase was designed to be comfortable, resilient, and contextually appropriate, reinforcing the neighborhood fabric while offering high-quality new housing for residents. We’re deeply grateful to the partners, community leaders, and contractors who helped bring these six to life, and we look forward to continuing the work in future phases.

We are excited to show updated renderings and drawings for the L.V. Hull Legacy Center campus expansion, following the community charrette/workshop held this weekend where the ideas were initially presented to the public. The charrette conversations were engaging, thought-provoking, and inspirational! Thank you to the many groups and attendees who not only sacrificed their Saturday but also traveled great distances to contribute their vital thoughts and experiences.

We are grateful to the project organizers, Arts Foundation of Kosciusko and LV Hull , for spearheading such an amazing community project. We are also grateful to our landscape architecture design partners, Spackman Mossop Michaels , for co-leading the charrette activities as well as coalescing the disparate site components into a functional and delightful campus.

We look forward to sharing more soon!

We’ve officially kicked off design for the L.V. Hull Legacy Center’s campus expansion — and we are having so much fun channeling L.V., her energy, and her extraordinary creative spirit.

Our team’s portion of this project includes the design of a new artist’s studio, the renovation of an existing barn into an outdoor event and gathering space, and thoughtful site improvements and signage to help unify the campus. Every decision is grounded in honoring L.V.’s legacy while creating spaces that feel welcoming, expressive, and alive with possibility.

The goal for this project is simple and powerful: to create a place in Kosciusko that can be enjoyed by all — a place where people gather, create, learn, and celebrate together. L.V. Hull’s home and studio have long been a beacon for artists and visitors alike, and this expansion will help carry that spirit forward for future generations.

A bit about the site: comprised of four existing buildings (two of which have been previously renovated), the campus is rich with history, texture, and opportunity. Each structure tells part of a story, and our design approach is focused on weaving those stories together — connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing accessibility, and creating moments for art, performance, and community interaction throughout the grounds.

We are deeply honored to play even a small role in shaping the future of this special place and can’t wait to share more as the design continues to evolve.

We’re excited to share some in-process renderings of a new project! We have been working with the City of Mobile’s Housing Improvement Program on the design of new housing for the historic Campground neighborhood. The Campground, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is an historically working-class and middle-class African-American neighborhood. The neighborhood features a rich variety of residential architecture that was developed between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. While shotguns remain the most prominent housing type, the Campground also includes examples of Neo-Classical, Queen Anne, Bungalow, Ranch, and Traditional Cottage architecture. These homes vary in their level of ornamentation, roof shapes, and the placement of front porches, showcasing a unique architectural diversity within the district.

These homes will be offered at an affordable price and are intended to encourage thoughtful, context-driven infill—demonstrating how contemporary design can strengthen existing communities, honor their history, and support long-term neighborhood vitality.

Thanks to Seaside Social News for publishing such an inspiring and well researched story about the Gulfport Gaslight District, which we are grateful to play a small part in by helping Ronnie Matthew Harris fulfill his restorative vision. The transformation of the Broadmoor Grocery will be the first step, but it will only be the beginning of what we expect to be a groundswell of community and commercial growth!
