Before’s and After’s of my Douglas Fir after three days of intense wiring and initial styling.
This tree was collected by Andy Smith of Golden Arrow Bonsai
I bought it at our convention in Milwaukee in 2022
Andy estimated age well over 200 years old
Repotted in spring of 2023 in a beautiful Ron Lang pot
Driven out to Oregon to Bonsai Miria to work with Ryan Neil to give it its initial styling, doing our best to save all the features already created and enhancing them.
It will get the rest of the year to recoup and we will continue to refine for years to come

A little side trip today up to Seattle, waking up to this view of Mt Rainier this morning from our hotel room.
Then up to tour the Boeing plant, the largest manufacturing facility in the world. Covers something like 1,000 acres. Unique fact the heating system in the assembly buildings is quite simple. If it is hot they open the doors and if it is cold they close them there are NO other heating equipment.
The pic with the 6 blue doors are where they assemble planes, the pic with 3 doors is where they paint the planes, with hand held spray guns, a number of painter and roughly 15 days to complete.
The planes with the green plastic o;the. Are waiting for their turn to get painted.
You are not allowed to take any pics inside in fact you have to put your phones in lockers before starting on the tour.
In the museum, while I have flow. On a number of 747’s they have a tail of one just to truely get a grasp of that planes size.

Another week at Mirai and walking the garden is always so inspirational
A number of big changes in the garden and they are still in the refinement stage
I am always mesmerized looking at some of these trees and seeing the drastic bends and turns that Mother Nature put into these trees decades or centuries ago, and yet the trees have survived
Many of them will experience a much calmer life as bonsai.

All packed up and ready to go, taking my Douglas firs out to Oregon to work with Ryan Neil @ Bonsai Mirai next week. I have been working with him for 4 years and this is the first time we will be working with my trees. This Douglas fir was collected by Andy Smith. I got it from him in 2022 and it is now ready to get its first official styling.
I will post after pictures it has been worked on

The smaller tree is also a Douglas fir, smaller and younger, probably in the 150+ age range the bigger one is estimated to be 250+.

Two of the better trees in my collection, can’t wait to see how they will evolve.

Busy Friday at Ancient Arts Bonsai
Finished sorting out the collected moss, got 4 trays of this beautiful moss for future use, for some upcoming shows
Today was “Fertilizer Friday”, made up about 400 bags of about a tablespoon each in little bags. I use these so the fertilizer does not clog up the soil. Distributed 370 bags so far and tomorrow will finish off once I bring the tropical trees outside, hopefully we will not have anymore overnight temps below 40 degrees.
Finally the Kusamono I posted yesterday produced two new white flowers today, it is just so neat to experience these every couple of days changes

Kusamono (grass planting) is a complimentary art form that is often displayed alongside bonsai.
They bring you moments of joy as they change and evolve during the year
This is a Kusamono, that was created by the talented artist Young Choe, last year at a Badger Bonsai meeting.

Worked on an older Japanese Maple Forest in need of a revival.
Eight hours later after some major cutbacks and shoot selections, I believe it is set up for a few years of regrowth where needed and managing the foliar growth not allowing long shoot blow outs
