DIY Fix: The Door That Won’t Latch Right
Ever go to shut a door and it just won’t catch? Maybe it feels loose, or you have to shove it a little too hard to get it to stay closed. Annoying, right? Before you call a pro, here’s an easy fix you can try yourself!

What’s Causing It?
Over time, doors shift due to humidity, house settling, or just wear and tear. If your latch isn’t lining up with the strike plate (the metal part on the door frame), the door won’t close properly.

How to Fix It in 5 Minutes:
1️⃣ Tighten the Hinges – Grab a screwdriver and check if any hinge screws are loose. Tightening them often solves the problem instantly!
2️⃣ Adjust the Strike Plate – If the latch still isn’t catching, try loosening the screws on the strike plate and shifting it slightly up or down. Then tighten it back in place.
3️⃣ Fill & Re-Screw – If the screws are stripped and won’t tighten, fill the hole with anchors, (or golf tees, or toothpicks & wood glue-yes, this actually works!) then reinsert the screws afterwards.

Still Not Closing Right?
If none of these work, the latch might need slight repositioning, or the door could be warped. That’s when it’s time to call in a pro—and, of course, we’re happy to help. Just send us a message or use our online form: https://www.upkeeputah.com/new-estimate

So you have a flooded basement...
The first thing to understand is that it is very likely not "ground water" coming from below or in from the side- this is highly unlikely in Utah. Go outside and take a look at your rain gutters. If you see water dripping off them, they are backed up and will need to be cleaned out and/or adjusted to allow water to flow to the downspout- check it next. It should be free flowing with plenty of water coming out. No water? You have backed up rain gutters. Call Upkeep and schedule an appointment to fix them.
On most houses the downspout is normally just a foot or so away from the foundation which is fine 90% of the time, but not always. Certainly not this year. You can pick up an extension for under $10 at the local hardware store. This is the cheapest, fastest and easiest fix to move the water away from your house. Try this first and see if the water level goes down after a day. If you find no signs of backed up or leaking rain gutters or closely placed downspouts the water may be coming from a leaking pipe.
Outdoor hose bibs should be looked at first. Specifically ones that are not frost proof/freeze proof. Look for signs of water near them or on the wall underneath. Also, give them a gentle wiggle from outside. They should be snug. If loose at all, they need to be secured and may be the source of your problem.
Hose bibs and rain gutters account for over 90% of the water damage we've seen this year ( #2 dishwashers and #3 swamp coolers last summer). If you need help locating the water source or getting the water out call Upkeep. It is the second fastest, cheapest and easiest way to deal with your flooded basement. And just like the deferred summer maintenance that likely could have prevented this situation to begin with, you'll want to jump on the problem now quicker than ever because it can turn into a mold problem fast. And then you could be looking at redoing the entire basement or worse. I hope this helps some of you dealing with a flooded basement. Please feel free to comment or let me know how things are going at your house. It may seem bad now- don't let it get worse.
To dryer ground,
-Dallas

One of the most important things a homeowner can do is to verify a contractors license. Unlicensed workers can make your homeowners insurance worthless while making you responsible for any bills if they get hurt while working on your house.
