DIY Fix: The Door That Won’t Latch Right
Ever go to shut a door and it just won’t catch? Maybe it feels loose, or you have to shove it a little too hard to get it to stay closed. Annoying, right? Before you call a pro, here’s an easy fix you can try yourself!
What’s Causing It?
Over time, doors shift due to humidity, house settling, or just wear and tear. If your latch isn’t lining up with the strike plate (the metal part on the door frame), the door won’t close properly.
How to Fix It in 5 Minutes:
1️⃣ Tighten the Hinges – Grab a screwdriver and check if any hinge screws are loose. Tightening them often solves the problem instantly!
2️⃣ Adjust the Strike Plate – If the latch still isn’t catching, try loosening the screws on the strike plate and shifting it slightly up or down. Then tighten it back in place.
3️⃣ Fill & Re-Screw – If the screws are stripped and won’t tighten, fill the hole with anchors, (or golf tees, or toothpicks & wood glue-yes, this actually works!) then reinsert the screws afterwards.
Still Not Closing Right?
If none of these work, the latch might need slight repositioning, or the door could be warped. That’s when it’s time to call in a pro—and, of course, we’re happy to help. Just send us a message or use our online form: https://www.upkeeputah.com/new-estimate
