Join local garden legend Pat at Flora Gardens for a hands on earthworm adventure! Kids ages 6 and up will discover why earthworms are so important, explore the incredible world beneath our feet, and build their own mini worm farm to take home. 🌱

🎟️ $15 per child. Pay the day of class.

💚 $5 from every registration will be donated to The Arc of Ventura County, a nonprofit organization improving the quality of life for more than 700 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Parents or guardians must stay during the workshop.

August might be the slowest month at the nursery, but it’s actually one of the best times to transform your pool area.

If your backyard is feeling a little boring, you don’t need a full landscape renovation. A few of the right plants can completely change the look.

My top 5 for an Ojai pool area right now:

1. Canna Lilies
2. Hibiscus
3. Clematis
4. Red Bananas
5. Bird of Paradise

Big leaves. Great color. Tropical feel. And plants that can make your backyard feel a lot more like a vacation.

My name is Danny, I own Flora Gardens in Ojai, and here are 5 plants I’d think twice about planting in our area and what I’d plant instead.

1. PAMPAS GRASS
It gets enormous, spreads by seed and is considered invasive in California.

Instead: California native deer grass, Muhlenbergia rigens.

2. TROPICAL MILKWEED
It can remain green through our mild winters, potentially encouraging out-of-season monarch breeding and contributing to disease concerns.

Instead: Native narrowleaf milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis, locally appropriate.

3. MEXICAN FEATHER GRASS
Beautiful, but it produces huge amounts of seed and can spread outside your garden.

Instead: Lomandra ‘breeze’, stays contained and great for our Mediterranean climate.

4. RUNNING BAMBOO
It spreads through underground rhizomes and can quickly end up where you never intended it to grow.

Instead: Clumping bamboo such as Bambusa oldhamii.

5. QUEEN PALM
They can require more irrigation to look their best and create plenty of cleanup from fronds and fruit.

Instead: plant a Crape Myrtle…same tall, architectural, tropical feel as Queen Palms, thrives in Ojai.

Owning a garden center isn’t just about selling plants. It’s about helping people choose the right plants for where they live.

Native milkweed is the best choice for monarch butterflies because it’s the plant they’ve evolved with for thousands of years. It supports healthy caterpillars, encourages natural migration, and strengthens our local ecosystem.

While tropical milkweed may look beautiful, it can stay in bloom too long, increase disease risk, and interfere with monarch migration in many parts of California.

This season, plant with purpose. 🌿 Every native milkweed you add to your garden helps create a healthier future for monarchs and other essential pollinators.
