We were fortunate to visit Bleheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill and home to the Dukes of Marlborough. In the walled garden there was a large sign to educate the public on how to plant for pollinators. Imagine my surprise when the majority of the plants listed were native to North America or specifically to South Carolina! Coneflowers, Rattlesnake Master, Coriopsis, Butterfly Flower, Goldenrod, Black- Susan, and Baptisia to name a few. All can be found in our island Butterfly Garden.

Be sure to visit the Butterfly Garden when the rain abates. Billy and his crew have put down new gravel and leveled the pathways so it is a smooth and safe walk. There are also lots of things blooming!

Now is a good time to prune azaleas. They can be cut down by one third any time before July 4th. The rule of thumb is to prune flowering shrubs right after they bloom to avoid cutting off net year's flower buds.

I will be talking about common garden weeds at the Port Royal Farmer's Market tomorrow (Saturday) at noon. If you are attempting to spray for weeds, don't. It will not work. There is no longer Glyphosate in any consumer products and nothing else really works. You can try the vinegar method, but the strong vinegar that is needed is wore than chemical herbicides.

The soil temperature is up to 70 degrees so all you lawn guys can fertilize. Use fertilizer for southern grasses, readily available down here.

This is my very favorite plant and you can see it in full bloom in the island Butterfly Garden. It is Phlomis fructicosa and hard to find in this country. It is hardy, like drought, and have sage colored leaves with these stacked yellow flowers. If you see it, buy it.

If you have Sweet Viburnum bushes, you may notice that the leaves are black with sooty mould fungus. This is caused by a white fly infestation. This seems to be the year for it, unfortunately. I have not found pesticides to work because white flies breed constantly. What I do find that works is to severely prune your bushes getting rid of all of the infected branches to improve air flow. I have also used jets of water from my hose to clear out the flies. No one knows why this is happening, but it is just one of those pestilences.
