T Minus 23 days until our Bel Air Garden turns One!

What a whirlwind it has been. Process seen here went as follows:
- Cover Bermuda grass with shingled cardboard, overlap by 6”
- Cover cardboard in 3”+ of high quality finished compost
- Now you are ready to plant and mulch!
- Plants are more ecologically relevant and resilient if native to our area!
- Mulch should be an undyed natural wood product, think pine bark or cedar mulch
- If planting during summer, Water for the first month and occasionally if drought conditions exist in first season with a classic oscillating yard sprinkler and be sure to water deeply. A hose timer can help.

Our sprinklers have been off this year. We are seeing the real impact of increased water infiltration as well as holding capacity and we can’t wait to continue creating more of this in our community.

I paused at the door after bringing out the recycling. Turned around to a monarch visitor that was dancing around our swamp milkweed. The garden has so many delights that pull your attention in!
Once fueled up our visitor delighted in acrobatics all around the yard, finding invisible thermal currents around the brick walls all while effortlessly fluttering about. Nectar from the one and only Swamp Milkweed! Rest stops included today were Shumard Oak and Ohio Spiderwort while Youpon Holly, Bald Cypress and Fragrant Sumac got excited flutterby’s
This is your reminder to take a moment and step out into the garden, listen to the birds, bees, and to spot the butterflies. Say a little thank you to the web of life around you. Without it we wouldn’t be here.

Cozy vibes only while walking through our client’s front yard. We are coming up on two years in this garden and it’s so exciting to watch ❤️🪲🪱

Special thanks to everyone who supports what we do, it means the world to us and to the birds and bugs 🐛 and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Check out this limited edition yard sign, it’s all the American Robin’s are talking about!

Today we’re working in the shade of a huge oak 🌳Working to build a permeable stone patio with low root disturbance to make sure she continues to be happy and allow accessible enjoyment of her shade.

Resting this morning and creating to-do lists. You really couldn’t ask for better weather to contemplate all the needs of the coming week. Up-potting a few tomato and pepper varieties, starting next round of veggies, paying bills and the tax lady, continuing on design and numbers, need to buy dog food, the tasks never end but that’s ok. All the while, I’m surrounded by bird calls, frogs and the beating wings of so many creatures.

We are approaching one year of the example garden. It has been so fun to watch these beauties take root over the last few seasons, and to watch them grow the last few weeks.

- American Plum
- Paw-paw
- Witchhazel
We also have some second year seedlings that are ready to put on some serious growth:
- Buttonbush

- Redbud

P.S if you are still reading this be on the lookout for some exciting announcements, plant, merch giveaways and some other things we can’t announce yet… coming this June!

Enjoying a restful day taking care of potting up, getting some numbers and designs out to clients, and listening to what the birds outside have to say. Hard not to get distracted and pulled into the garden. Harder than that is deciphering the wisdom the plants have for us. Go out into your garden and listen to her whisper, we have so much to learn.

This past year was a rooting year for sure. We have worked on so many projects over the last year and the process of seeing them come into their beauty as plants develop is just everything.
Sometimes you have to spend a season prepping the area, designing hardscape, dreaming about what you want.
Next, planting! a season of patience as new plants get acquainted with their new surroundings, this is a season of creating a microbiological community so plants can support each other.
Then, once again, a season of rooting and developing flowers all in preparation for the summer heat.
We are enjoying these unseasonably rootable temperatures, resting and preparing to pop off in the heat later this year!
