Rainy Highway Crash Nearly Strikes Officer
Richmond, Virginia — March 5, 2025
A routine traffic stop turned into a life-threatening situation on Wednesday afternoon as heavy rain slicked a local interstate, leading to a dramatic chain-reaction collision. An emergency responder was standing on the roadway, attempting to divert traffic around a minor accident, when a passing motorist lost control of their vehicle on the saturated pavement.
The footage, captured by a driver in a nearby lane, shows a black sedan suddenly hydroplaning while approaching the scene. The vehicle spins violently, slamming into a stationary police cruiser with its lights flashing. The impact sent debris flying across the highway and narrowly missed the officer, who was forced to jump out of the path of the sliding car just seconds before the collision occurred.
Following the initial impact, the out-of-control sedan continued to slide, striking a tow truck that was already on the scene to assist with the previous incident. Witnesses reported that the sound of the crash was deafening, and several other drivers had to take evasive maneuvers to avoid joining the pileup as visibility dropped during the downpour.
Local authorities are using the incident as a stark reminder to "slow down and move over" when emergency lights are visible. They emphasized that even at moderate speeds, standing water on the road can cause tires to lose contact with the surface, making it impossible for drivers to steer or stop effectively.
