It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of longtime AIA member, Duane Mass.

He was born in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1957 to Frank and Laura Imogene Mass, and was raised on a family ranch in Hartshorne, Oklahoma. Duane worked as a carpenter before attending Oklahoma State University to study architecture. He founded Mass Architects, Inc. in 1995, focusing his work on building community-oriented projects for Oklahoma’s county health departments, multiple Oklahoma school districts, airports, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, The Education and Employment Ministry, and by working as the Capitol Architect for the renovation of the Oklahoma State Capitol building.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Laura Imogene Mass, and is survived by his wife Robin; his children Frank Mass and wife Lauren and their daughter Vivian, Jessica Douglas and husband Collin, and Rachel Mass. He is also survived by his daughter Natalie and his siblings Mickey Switzer, Roger Mass, Lannette Huskey, Susan Evans, and Frankie Mass.

Services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Oklahoma City at 10:30am on Monday December 15th, and burial and additional service will be held at 10:30am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hartshorne on Wednesday December 17th.

DYK: Most visitors to the Oklahoma Capitol Building don't know this part of the restoration project: The attics!

Above each of the north, south, east and west wings, large attics house necessary electrical, mechanical and fire sprinkler systems to service the building, primarily the Senate and House of Representatives chambers.

In the 100 years after original construction, these attic spaces became filled with unused and abandoned systems. As part of the restoration project, Manhattan Construction Group has demolished much of the old, unused materials and performed extensive cleanup.

Manhattan will also install new fall-protection systems (shown in yellow) to provide a 100% safe work environment for those needing to perform maintenance in the attic.
