Structures designed using passive building principles are the kinds of places where you want to spend icy, blustery days.

That’s because passive design hyper-conserves energy. ⚡️

Various aspects of passive buildings—like thick & continuous insulation, weather-repelling seals around windows and doors, and heat-recapturing technology—are designed to keep heated or cooled air inside and buffer against unpredictable outdoor temperatures.

The result is extraordinary comfort. Every corner of your home or office will be the same temperature. No drafts. No cold or hot spots. No schlepping a blanket around for the entire season.

Deep winter is one of our favorite times to sing passive praises! 🏠

The first two buildings in the Southwest Washington Regional Agricultural Business & Innovation Park are officially open!

This destination and community hub, located on a 13-acre parcel in Tenino, Washington, gives South Sound food producers and artisans a place to create goods and to process, store, package, and sell them. It also gives the community a venue and tourists a space where they can get a literal taste of our region.

We worked with a variety of stakeholders, including Dragonwheel Investment Group, the City of Tenino, and Thurston Economic Development Council. The process included a shift from a single building concept to two separate buildings, multiple permits, shell designs, and interior tenant improvements.

The north building houses the Stone City Event Center and Simply Organic Cafe & Catering. Designed for maximum flexibility, the space expands to the outdoors and incorporates an exterior stage for larger events and is equipped to support a variety of indoor events year-round.

The south building accommodates multiple tenants, each with unique visions. We held meetings with each of them and generated three distinctive spaces, intended to support their individual needs and workflows.

The shared interiors of each building are designed to be pleasant and welcoming—for instance, generous natural light filters into the internal spaces through clerestory windows that allow for balanced natural daylighting.

We designed the agricultural center to become an anchor in Tenino and in the region and can’t wait to see how it continues to grow! 🤍

We are psyched to share that our CEO and Principal Architect Tessa Bradley was recently a featured guest on the Marketing Passivehaus podcast!

"In this episode, we discuss the difficulties of talking about passivhaus and high-performance building in a way that's not so terribly unsexy, the value of having a place to show clients—whether it's a past client's home, an office or an apartment they can spend time in—and the importance of knowing when going for certification will be beneficial for all involved."

Thank you James for taking the time to chat about our firm and the work that we do. Such a fun listen, check out the link in our bio!

When approached us about improving the space they were moving into for their brand new organization, we thought, hell yes. 👏

Their vision for renovating the midcentury commercial building in downtown Olympia was to create a safe and functional space for people in recovery or in crisis. But they also wanted it to be pleasing and welcoming. The vision behind this project was to mirror the Franklin Street Harm Reduction (FSHR) lens of dignity, accessibility, and care.

When people enter the mural-clad building and are surrounded by modern materials and an open, light-filled space, it sends the message that people in crisis deserve beautiful facilities and calm, happy spaces.

The outside, painted with geometric patterns in the organization’s signature purples, is designed to be an eye-catching and welcoming downtown hub. Inside, a palette of soft purples, warm woods, and natural light creates a calming atmosphere intended to reduce stress and foster connection.

Christina McVeigh, co-director and Licensed Mental Health Counselor says the building is “beautiful and peaceful, not intimidating or medical. Right away, people walk in and feel welcomed.”

A harm reduction approach to recovery centers the role of the individual in their own process and values inclusivity, stigma reduction, and focuses on accompanying people along a judgment-free journey. But it’s about “more than just public health and substance use,” Christina says. “It’s also about personal choice and hospitality.”

In addition to providing one-on-one recovery assistance and support groups for substance use and mental health, the FSHR building offers:
- A multimedia room for computer and phone access and group meetings
- Referrals for housing, advocacy, and more
- Art and games workshops
- A vending machine stocked with free safety supplies for the community, such as NARCAN, condoms, and first aid gloves
- Coffee!

Thank you, FSHR, for asking us to partner with you to create a thoughtful design that advances public health and social equity. We’re so proud to be part of your work. 🌟

New Employee Spotlight!

We’re delighted to introduce you to Daniel Wade. Daniel is a Designer I who just started at Artisans Group in September.

His favorite part of the job is being able to show up every day and apply what he learned the day before. “I am always learning new things, which never makes for a boring day.”

Currently, he’s working on our PHIUS-certified townhouses with Habitat for Humanity, ensuring that these housing options will be affordable and comfortable. “I am excited to watch this project come to life and to be able to see my contribution to this community.”

When he’s not working, Daniel likes to hike, kayak, swim or just sit in the sun when it’s warm outside. During the cold months, he heads to the mountains to go snowboarding, snow shoeing, or out to a local bar to play billiards.

We always ask our new hires to recommend something to the public—what do they think everyone should watch, read, or see? “I am a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings books and movies,” Daniel told us, “It’s like living in a fantasy world. There is a lot of depth and great characters that make you fall in love with the story.”

Favorite animal? A fox—it represents intelligence, adaptability, and even good fortune in some cultures. “The fox’s ability to shed its coat can symbolize transformation, growth, and shedding old habits for new beginnings.”

We love it, Daniel. And we love that you’re a part of our team. Welcome! 🤍

In the winter, one way to overcome the emotional toll of gray skies (and more gray skies) is to set the mood by warming up the lighting in your house. Color-wise, this means to go for warmer, more yellow lights instead of cooler, blue ones.

Science confirms what we already know inherently: warm, soft, indirect lighting makes a space feel cozy and safe. (Studies suggest that warm light makes us feel calm. 😌) On the Kelvin scale, aim for the lower end of the spectrum—suggestions for optimal hygge lighting range from 1800k to 2700k. The key is to bathe your space in pools of warm light.

Here’s how to make a space where you’ll want to curl up and take a nap or a sip of tea:
✨Opt for lamps. Use table lamps, standing lamps, and mood lamps with warm white bulbs to create mystery and contentment and a good balance of light and shadows.
✨Put up fairy lights. Create some magic with string lights strung across your ceiling or draped over a window. Keep them up all winter to ward off the dark.
✨Turn off your overhead lights. Unless you’re cleaning, you probably don’t need harsh overhead lighting. Turn them off and rely on ambient light sources instead.
✨Tuck candles around your house. Candles, especially in a glass container, provide quite a bit of light and make a space feel instantly cozy.

Exciting news! We are so honored by the awarding of two Certificates, one of Citation and one of Honorable Mention, by the Southwest Washington AIA.

These two projects, the Dogwood House and the Billy Frank Jr Leadership Institute, mean so much to us as a company and show the broad range of what we do here at AGAP. More on both of these projects can be found on our Portfolio and Blog https://artisansgroup.com/. Thank you again SWW AIA! 🤍
