There are many factors to consider when choosing between steel and wood construction. Durability, cost, maintenance, strength, and environmental impact all need to be considered. So what are the pros and cons?

Steel is known for its exceptional strength and durability. It can withstand extreme weather conditions such as high winds, heavy snow and seismic activity. It is resistant to pests, rot and fire. It also maintains its integrity over time as it does not warp, shrink or crack.

While wood is strong and can be used in many applications, it is more susceptible to environmental factors such as moisture, which can lead to rot and decay. It is also vulnerable to pests like termites which can compromise structural integrity.

Initial costs of wood construction are often lower, making it attractive for budget conscious projects. Labor costs can also be lower because of the ease of working with wood. When timeline is a factor, wood is often more readily available than steel.

Although steel may have a higher initial cost, it may be more cost effective over time because of its durability and lower maintenance. With a protective coat to prevent corrosion, it can last for decades with little maintenance. Wood on the other hand requires maintenance to prevent rot, decay and pest infestations.

Located at the corner of North 180th Street and West Maple Rd, this shopping center strives to become a vibrant and active space for both retail and restaurant businesses. A green courtyard defines the axis of the site, helping to reduce radiant heat from pavement. Additionally, the conical plaza featuring a splashpad defines the corner of the site, facing the busy intersection. Overall, this retail space aims to set the tone for the rest of the area, instilling senses of community, activity, and respite.

If you drive between Elkhorn and Gretna, you know how fast the area is developing. It is exciting to see the area grow. The second phase of the Rows at Coventry is underway. It will add an additional 179 units. Amazing how fast they fill up!
