Husband-and-wife team Lisa and Jim Janvrin have taken their home of 13 years to the next level, collaborating on a fresh remodel of their raised ranch in Chapel Hill with an all-white interior. After an extensive three-year planning process, they gutted their entire home March 2023, expanding their existing 2,000 feet by adding new additions to the kitchen and downstairs den, moving and installing all new major mechanicals along the way. They dug down and built up, knocking through foundation walls to extend the space back. Rather than forfeit location and atmosphere for a new home, the Janvrins decided to renovate the project themselves sans an architect. Lisa planned meticulously, and they hired out subcontractors to transform their living quarters into a European-inspired dream home.

Flashback Friday to 2014 and my work with bringing their Pie Barn to life. From initial sketches of red chairs, firefly lighting and church pew seating to final install it was such an amazing project. (Of course sampling the pie was the best part of my project exploration.)

Three days ago a devastating tornado demolished many homes in my community. Since then I've been talking to others about the rebuilding of these properties.⁠
⁠
At the moment clean up is underway. Soon plans for new beginnings will take shape as people put their homes and lives back together. ⁠
⁠
I encourage those starting fresh whether it is a rebuild, new build or remodel to take this opportunity to hone in on creating a truly personal space. Making an effort to place only items that bring a smile to your face or trigger a good memory is an excellent place to start. Whether that be furniture or decor. ⁠
⁠
Design considerations for a custom interior:⁠
– plan spaces that you will actually use⁠
– skip the trends⁠
– limit purely decorative items⁠
– keenly curate art, make it personal⁠
– give extra attention to scale⁠
– maximize natural light⁠
⁠
And don't be afraid to take your time on the interior design. You don't have to have every piece of furniture or decor in place on your move in date. Slow design is an approach that encourages a reflective process, with the goal of positive well-being for your family and your bank account. It allows time for thoughtful decisions and purchases.⁠
