10 day family project.
It’s a tiny space with a cellar door in the floor at the far end. Aside from vinyl flooring updates, this mud/laundry room hadn’t changed since my dad & stepmom moved into the house 47 years ago.
On demo day we peeled off the paneling and contact paper to find damaged plaster, wallpapered drywall & old water damage that was probably the catalyst for the paneling.
The dryer sat too far out from the wall (due to the vent) to open its door in the narrow part of the space, so it lived in the entry part of the room. I wanted to be able to set the dryer against the wall & also raise the appliances a bit for easier access. When I cut a chase into the wall I found original exterior tongue & groove beadboard that had been plastered over when the porch was enclosed decades before my family acquired the property.
The color scheme was chosen based on finding out Kari’s favorite color is purple & I wanted some bits of lighter wood to tie into the light wood cabinets in the adjacent kitchen. Pegs all around are super useful (& replace the nails my dad put up when asked for hooks 😂).
My nephew Logan was a tremendous help throughout the project: gathering supplies, demo & clean up, painting panels, installing drywall, using all the power tools & saws. He did a fantastic job building the appliance platform level on the sloped floors.
Everyone who had some availability came & pitched in with demo, painting, sanding, clear coating, installing, spackling & touching up.
Coming back from a supply run, my sister Jen & I had a lengthy backroad adventure (due to flooding) in our dad’s old pickup. As soon as we got back on pavement, we rewarded ourselves with breakfast twist cones.
This project was full of surprises & couldn’t have been done without everyone’s help, which I greatly appreciate.
