Happy Sustainability Saturday!
Here at the Otsego ReUse Center, sustainability is at the core of what we do. Not only do we help the community by providing jobs and affordable goods, we also help to protect the environment to ensure we can all live happy and healthy lives.
For our first sustainability spotlight, we would like to highlight our polystyrene compressor! This machine helps us convert the community’s polystyrene into blocks that can be reused! This keeps Styrofoam out of the landfill and provides affordable materials to businesses.
Why is it important to keep Styrofoam out of the landfill? Styrofoam is a form of plastic. Like most plastics, this material does not break down naturally in landfills, meaning it will sit there for many, many years, pilling up, until the landfill reaches capacity, or make its way into waterways, threatening aquatic animals and ecosystems.
Help divert waste from landfills by dropping of your unwanted Styrofoam at the Otsego ReUse Center! We accept white hard clean polystyrene in designated collection bins. We cannot recycle packing peanuts, flimsy packing material, colorful, or contaminated Styrofoam.
