The Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Ltd was established in 1918 by the sheep industry as a national system of collecting and marketing its members' wool on a co-operative basis. In 1972 the livestock supplies division was started to provide sheep producers with supplies not readily available in Canada. Over the years the store has expanded into other livestock supplies, equipment, and many products for the farming community.

What makes a co-operative different?

A co-operative is built around people — not shareholders. That means the focus stays on supporting members, communities, and industries for the long term.

Why do co-operatives matter?

• They help keep services and supplies available in rural communities
• They support local producers and agriculture
• Profits are reinvested back into the business and members
• Decisions are made with the community in mind
• They create stronger connections between producers, customers, and local economies

At CCWG, being a co-operative means working together to support Canadian agriculture, livestock producers, fibre industries, and rural communities across the country.

Co-operatives are built on the idea that we are stronger when we work together.

Ever wondered what “Crude Protein” means on livestock feed tags?

Crude Protein is a measurement used to estimate the amount of protein in feed. Protein is essential for growth, muscle development, milk production, egg production, reproduction, and overall animal health.

Why does protein matter?
Animals use protein to help build and repair body tissues. Different animals — and different stages of life — require different protein levels to stay healthy and productive.

Examples:
• Chick starter feed is often around 20–21% crude protein to support rapid growth
• Dairy cattle may need higher protein levels to support milk production
• Horses in light work generally need lower protein levels than growing foals
• Sheep and goats may require different protein levels depending on age and production stage

Higher protein does not always mean “better.” The right balance is important because feeding too much or too little protein can affect animal performance and feed efficiency.

When choosing feed, crude protein is one of the key numbers producers look at to help match nutrition to their animals’ needs.

Have questions about feed nutrition? Stop by your local CCWG branch and our team can help you find the right feed for your animals.

Not all electric fence wire is the same — choosing the right one can make a big difference in fence performance, visibility, and durability.

Here are a few quick tips when selecting electric fencing wire:

• Polywire and polytape are lightweight and highly visible, making them great for temporary fencing and rotational grazing
• High tensile wire is stronger and designed for long-term permanent fencing
• Wider polytape is easier for horses and livestock to see
• Stainless steel and mixed metal strands help improve conductivity
• The longer your fence line, the more important good conductivity becomes

Different livestock and fencing setups may require different products depending on visibility, strength, portability, and distance.

Whether you’re fencing cattle, horses, sheep, goats, or setting up temporary pasture, CCWG carries a large selection of electric fencing supplies to help you find the right fit for your operation.
