HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL

Remember when I advised you not to prune your freeze-dried plants right away as the stems might still be alive? Well, as always, I was correct! The recent mild spell has the garden waking up. A stroll around Grumpy’s garden revealed a toasted rosemary a-greening, defoliated distyliums budding out, scorched aucubas with plump, new buds, hydrangea stems lined with flower buds, hellebores, camellias, forsythia, daffodils in bloom, and red-shouldered hawks plucking baby squirrels from their nests. Soon I will give the ornamental grasses a haircut to make way for new leaves. February may be cold and gloomy up north, but in the South it’s the beginning of spring!
