For years, the front yard was just a simple hillside covered in grass. But a couple of years ago, I had an idea—why not turn it into something beautiful? I envisioned a pathway lined with roses, shrubs, perennials, and annuals. And so, we got to work.
We used wood chips from our old fruitless mulberry tree to lay down the path, giving it a natural, homegrown touch. I started gathering plants from local plant sales—one of my favorite spots being the American River College Horticulture Department’s amazing spring sale. I also had several potted roses that I knew would thrive so much better in the ground.
Now, two years later, that hillside has transformed into a vibrant, blooming garden.
On the left side of the yard, closer to the house, we carried that same spirit forward. We expanded a small flower bed and added a quaint little pond. Again, most of the plants came from local sales, and clearance racks. The bed has really filled in beautifully.
Of course, I still have a few plants waiting to go in the ground—because what gardener doesn’t? I also have two hanging baskets ready to be hung.
I can’t wait to see how this space continues to grow and evolve over the years. It’s been such a rewarding journey.
