Safety, safety first then teamwork.

It was everything under the sun last week. Equipment failure, crew tension and weather reschedules had just about everyone cross but all of that aside…. We closed the hellish week with the first official meeting of The Super Safe Committee.

Some months ago we did our workers comp safety eval. The auditor attended one of our weekly safety meetings and offered us a discount to create a safety committee as well as act as a consultant and example for them to better understand our industry.

Monetary gain may have spoken to the business side of this but the concept of employee driven safety protocol and open discussion speaks to us all. It is real lives and real livelihood on the line every day.

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to this company.

Our hope is that we not only become better at identifying and reducing the everyday risks but improve our ability to collectively communicate. Guess we all white hats now.

A quickie in the city 🍃

Always a bit of a hassle working in Allentown city. Small bustling streets, permits required, no parking, road closures, traffic re routes, resident notices and dealing with many oblivious and sometimes irritated pedestrians.

The objective was to move in/move out and we did just that. We had this declining Red oak down, stump ground and roads opened within 3 hrs. Got an extra day with the lift so put her to work. had a larger Oak to tie into and did what he does best. Got er’ down. .bartholomew , we hustled the ground work and got outta dodge.

I cannot help but pay respect to these urban powerhouses. Spending it’s life shadowed beneath the canopy of much larger Oak trees, she sat dwarfed, neglected and sandwiched between the concrete and the asphalt. Bearing the scars of the harsh environment she stood with many extensive hollows, years of wood decay fungi thriving at the base and a large shear crack separating what viable wood fibers were left.

City trees are often overlooked or considered a nuisance all the while silently serving us.

Your urban forest can lower city temps by 10 degrees, reduce pollution and significantly minimize wind impact (hence the large shear crack.) Heck, even just looking at trees is scientifically proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve mood. Tell me anything else that gives so much and asks for so little.

Unlike you and I, trees cannot remove themselves from the multitude of stresses they endure. They must adapt or decline…. and the urban environment is simply not conducive. Minimal planting space, mechanical injury, heat island effect, drought, air and soil pollution are just a few of the everyday burdens trees experience while working hard to improve our existence.

Putting this post together took longer than the actual job, I hope you read it and perhaps view your urban forest with a new frame of mind

Neurons that fire together, wire together.”

I heard that referenced in a Gaia show recently and it’s echoed through my week. Typically the quote is used in neuroscience and psychology but I can apply just about anything to arboriculture.

It really got me thinking about our company as less of a machine and more of brain.

The theory is that every feeling, thought, physical sensation and experience initiates hundreds, maybe thousands of neurons to form a network in your brain. When you repeat a thought or feeling, the brain learns to trigger those same neurons every single time creating cycles of thought.

Full circle to crew cohesiveness: The more we connect with each other and share positive experiences surrounding trees and the work of it, the stronger the beneficial synaptic bonds become and the more conscious we become as individuals, as a crew and as a company.

This was our 3rd TCI Expo. We road tripped a total of 22 hours as a crew without even a quarrel. As always, it was an experience. Much to learn and much too much to buy.

Well done and . Thank you for yet another successful expo. We all benefited greatly from this trip.

Crane day fell through whilst onsite and nothing worked in our favor that day. Tensions were high and people were downright angry. Swipe for the plot twist ✌🏻

Jokes on y’all cause Baylor’s got the cure for that. Who can be angry on a rollercoaster ? ABSOLUTELY NOBODY.

Could have added another job on but it was a good week for the business and morale matters. BAYLOR DAY 2021

Thank you all for making lemonade with us. .bartholomew Cameo by Mike. Mike from Betterscapes

Keep on chooglin’ 💨🌳

Samantha and I wrapping up the last of storm work while crew smashes out our regularly scheduled programming.

We had a curious case with this emergency Honey locust for the owners of one of our most favorite restaurants, Bolete. I honestly woulda done this job for a years supply of their duck hash. 🤣

The first limb failed roughly 3’ from the parent stem in the calm hours of the morning, prior to the arrival of a significant weather event and landing on one heck of a hammock, causing no actual damage.

It was noted that the limb had been elevated to hell resulting in all the weight at the end of the branch, a substandard practice known as “Lions Tailing” as well as suspected Thyronectria canker.

Although not common in Locust trees, sudden summer limb drop was our immediate thought with no apparent signs of decay and absolutely no force imposed.

Sudden summer limb drop is a phenomenon known to occur during hot, humid and calm conditions sometimes following a period of rain. The failed limbs are typically over extended with weighted ends.

The exact cause is unknown but many theories surround the unusual condition including drought, wood-cell expansion and water pressure from lack of transpiration during high humidity.

The second and much larger limb failing during the peak of the storm, again roughly 3’ -4’ from stem smashing into a rod fence but ripping and holding on in true locust fashion. No apparent signs of decay at the point of failure but a strong enough force will do that.

We got er’ down with no further damage to the fence. Another gentle reminder to have your trees evaluated for health and safety by a professional. Proper pruning can make or break it

We came, we saw, we kicked it’s ass.

A new Mother Nature taking over and the skeleton storm crew was in full effect. Severe storms last week and what was thought to be a tornado ripped through this little neighborhood. Destruction at every home.

Operation Pignut: We had a beautiful, fully functioning Pignut hickory, carya glabra with extensive root to heart rot. Fruiting bodies of Deadman’s finger on a structural root. Zone lines throughout the lower trunk and rhizomorphs of another fungi found inside the hollowed trunk and roots.

There was nothing outwardly obvious about the decline of this tree. The vascular system of all trees is located just below the bark. This area is typically operational even with a completely hollow center. The result can be a full canopy with an unsuspecting structural defect. Luckily it was only property that was damaged in the fall of this stunner.

Ole’ Pignut didn’t go without a fight. It was Plan A-C and back to A kinda day. Hickory trees are among the strongest and in my opinion have a rugged but regal appeal about them. A real Sean Connery type.

Big ups to Trent and Paul for finishing cleanup and wood removal while Samantha and I knocked out the tail end of 40 estimates for the week.
