Sow & Sip Society

Sow & Sip Society Cultivate & Celebrate a Garden Inspired Life! Gardening, Design, Recipes and Creative Living. Welcome! You will find that I love to cook vintage family recipes.

I am Aly and I am the founder of the container gardening and cooking blog, Dirty Little Boxes...Soon to be known as the Sow & Sip Society! I am going through a rebranding and expanding to offer a quarterly subscription box for gardeners who's greatest joy is gathering family and friends in their garden to connect, commune and celebrate with food and drink created from everything they have worked s

o hard to grow. My website is a tribute to my family, my childhood in Oklahoma, and my Grandmas, Margie and Avis, who inspired my love of gardening, cooking, creating, and making. I use them as inspiration and then add modern and healthy twists that are often dairy and gluten free.

Here is my concept development for a wine tasting event I am hosting this weekend. 🍷

On my website I talk about "the spaces between"...mostly the spaces in our home that rest between inside and outside...sunrooms and porches and screen doors and billowing curtains...also the spaces between then and now, traditional and modern, and the spaces between my Grandmothers and me.

This concept is about the space between summer and fall. Some call it the "shoulder season". For me it's the time when I am looking forward to the holidays and family gatherings, but I am not quite ready to let go of summer and fresh flowers and veggies from the garden. The days are getting shorter, the mornings are cooler, and the shadows are longer, but our home is warmer, the food is heartier and the gatherings become more intimate and meaningful.

So for this weekend's table settings, rather than bright greens and pinks of summer or deep greens, browns and reds of winter and holidays, I am using my Grandmother's vintage china set, circa 1950's and her Milk and Cranberry Glass collections to create a table design full of the colors between summer and fall...Sage, Olive, Cranberry and Gold. ❤️

Do more of what makes your soul happy. ❤️
For me it's flowers, friends and feeling a little fancy.

I call this an English Garden

Recipe:
2 oz Empress Indigo Gin
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
3/4 oz English Lavender simple syrup (1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, 2-3 heaping Tbsp dried lavender in small pot. Bring all ingredients to a boil, stirring frequently until sugar dissolves. Summer 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Turn off the heat and let sit 10 minutes. Strain through cheese cloth into clean jar.)

Combine ingredients into a shaker with lots of ice and a few springs of English Thyme (do not muddle). Shake and serve in a beautiful vintage martini glass or coup with a fresh air dried lemon slice and fresh sprig of English Lavendar.
Serve it to a friend and then join her in a toast to living your best life. ❤️

Fruit roll-ups are one of my favorite unique and creative sweet treats when hosting a garden or patio gathering. They are very easy to make, convenient, full of naturally vibrant colors that can be tailored to your party theme, and they hold big appeal among both children and adults. There is nothing that takes a grown adult back to their childhood faster than eating a fruit roll up with the same joy and fun they had for them as a kid. And the roll ups become even more special when you can say they are made from fruit from your garden. Talk about showing off!

For this recipe I added dried rose petals for a botanical touch of sophistication. According to WebMD, rose petals also add health benefits like Vitamin C, A and E, as well as Iron, Calcium and anti-oxidant properties. More reasons to tell your family and friends these snacks are healthy!

Gluten Free Sourdough Journey Day #11:

This is a piece I like to call "Sourdough Carnage". Three starters...three complete messes! 😄 Tonight I decided my jar was way to dirty and at risk of developing bad bacteria, so I switched to a fresh clean, and smaller jar.

Tonight it continues to have that funky vinegar smell, which is a good thing. I also continued a ratio of 50 g of starter, 60 g of water, and 50 g of Bob's Red Mill 1:1 GF baking flour. I will likely continue that ratio moving forward, as the 1:1:1 ratio seems too dry.

My starter has been doubling within 8 hours every day, which is necessary to successfully start using it, but I'm reading I should wait at least 14 days to ensure all the bad bacteria is gone and that I only have the good bacteria left..so only three days to go!!!

More to come tomorrow... ❤️
