Did you know?...

Garlic makes a great companion plant!

Many pests that we hate to see on the plants we work so hard to grow dislike plants in the allium family - like garlic and onions. Alliums produce a strong scent (think garlic and onions) that many insect pests don't want to be around. So planting alliums near certain pest-prone plants will help keep (amongst others) aphids, slugs, snails, carrot root maggot, spider mites, and even rabbits away. Alliums also have anti-fungal properties which can benefit nearby plants as well.

Plants that benefit from growing near garlic:
* STRAWBERRIES
*TOMATOES
* BRASSICAS -- cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts
*CARROTS
*SPINACH
*PEPPERS (sulfurous compounds in garlic help prevent fungal diseases)
*FRUIT TREES
*ROSES
*And others...

A word of CAUTION though:
Not all plants like sharing space with garlic! Don't plant garlic or onions near beans, peas, asparagus, parsley, sage, or other alliums (onions, shallots, leeks) - these plants will compete for nutrients with the garlic which might stunt their growth. Also note that garlic grows mostly underground so if you plant near any other root crops be careful to give them enough space.

Turns out if you forget about your garlic and don't harvest it, every clove will sprout in a big clump the next spring!

I got to spend these sunny days digging up, carefully separating, then replanting garlic sprouts! Now we have garlic planted aaaaalllllll over our yard, in every garden bed and the corners of the yard and under the fruit trees- we'll be overrun this year (good thing I love cooking with garlic, yum!).

Even with planting it absolutely everywhere, I still have more than I know what to do with. So... Little Pond Gardens in back in business already this spring. Hit me up if you want some very healthy garlic starts.

How do cucumbers grow so fast? They got way ahead of me and now they're bitter. Luckily they're also mature enough to save seeds! And the Ladies don't seem to mind 🐓🤷
