REMINDER🚨Water lines can freeze as temperatures drop below 32 degrees – especially in homes with lines located outdoors or in attics.

If your pipes appear frozen, wait until temperatures rise and see if water flow returns on its own. If the pipes do not thaw as the day warms up and there is a visible leak, you may need to contact a licensed plumber for assistance.

✅ Cover exposed pipes, spigots and backflows with old sheets or towels.
✅ Avoid heating your pool, but if you have variable pump, run it at a lower speed to save energy while preventing freezing.
✅ Trickle faucets that share an exterior wall or have exposed pipes.

As temperatures are forecasted to drop to 32°F or below this weekend, Apopka Public Services Department wants to help residents take a few simple steps to protect their plumbing. Cold weather can cause pipes to contract and expand, increasing the risk of leaks, breaks, or other water system issues.

Here are some easy preventative measures you can take:
🔹 Insulate Exposed Water Pipes: Wrap outdoor or exposed pipes with towels or other insulating materials to help keep the water inside warmer and reduce the risk of freezing.
🔹 Protect Outdoor Valves, Spigots, and Backflow Devices: Cover outdoor water valves, hose bibs, and backflow prevention devices when freezing temperatures are expected.
🔹 Keep a Faucet Dripping: Allow a small, steady drip from one or two indoor faucets. The movement of water can help prevent freezing. If possible, collect this water and reuse it for indoor plants or other household needs.
🔹 Know Your Emergency Shut-Off Valve: Make sure you know where your main water shut-off valve is located, typically outside your home, so you can act quickly if needed.
🔹 Manage Your Irrigation System: Turn off your irrigation system at the main controller and drain the system by opening each valve. Once drained, close the valves and leave the system off until temperatures rise and irrigation is needed again.

UPDATE 10/8, 6PM: All Seminole County and City sandbag operations are now CLOSED.

SANDBAGS: With Central Florida in the path of Hurricane Milton, Seminole County and City sandbag operations are open for residents to prepare.

Empty bags and sand are available; residents should bring their own shovels and a partner to assist with filling and loading.

Sandbags are available at Osceola Heritage Park (1211 Shakerag Road, Kissimmee) on Sunday, October 6, and Monday, October 7, to assist with storm preparations.

Estaremos repartiendo sacos de arena mañana 6 de octubre de 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. y lunes 7 de octubre de 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. en Osceola Heritage Park. Cara hogar se le permiten hasta 25 sacos de arena. Recuerda traer su propia pala o herramienta de llenado. Los suministros son limitados y se otorgan por orden de llegada.
