"CELEBRATING 30 YEARS!"
In February of 1996, Max Brito, AIA, and I founded Rhodes+Brito Architects in Orlando, Florida. Max and I shared the vision that we, as a firm, could make a meaningful contribution to the built environment here in this region. We believed that our firm was more than design – it is a catalyst for transforming communities. That sense of "community" remains the heartbeat of everything we do.
Our beginnings were humble. Our first major investment was two Gateway computers purchased on credit cards, and we knew things were getting serious when we signed our first office lease for $600 a month. From those modest roots, we’ve grown into one of Florida’s largest African American architectural practices and one of Central Florida's most respected firms. Today, our leadership has expanded to include Principals Byron Lastrapes and Adel Shalaby.
This month, as we kick off our 30th Anniversary celebration, we reflect on a journey that has inevitably brought both triumphs and trials. We have navigated the economic downturns of 2001 and 2008, endured the tragic loss of our colleague Gail Cleavenger in 2018, and persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic. Our success is built on people — the more than 160 employees who have contributed to this firm over the past 30 years. It is demonstrated through the thousands of dollars donated to charities across Central Florida and throughout the State, and through the countless high school students who have walked through our doors seeking inspiration.
Our leadership and staff have given generously of their time, volunteering to make a lasting difference in our community. In recognition of our work, the Orlando Chapter of the AIA named us “Firm of the Year” in 2016. And among our proudest accomplishments is the design of the FAMU College of Law, completed in 2006.
We will reflect not only on the numerous projects we’ve designed or the milestones and awards we've achieved, but on the social and economic impact Rhodes+Brito has had on the people, charitable organizations, and businesses we have partnered with over our 30 years of operation.
As we mark this milestone, we extend sincere gratitude to our clients, collaborators, employees, and community partners. Your trust, partnership, and support have made our journey possible.
Rhodes+Brito Architects stands today as a testament to perseverance, purpose, and performance. As we look ahead, we move forward with integrity, remain dependable in our commitments, work collaboratively, and stay proactive in shaping what comes next. This African American History Month, we are reflecting on our place in the architecture industry. With fewer than 2% of licensed architects identifying as African American, we proudly recognize the importance of being an example for the next generation of architects of color. But most importantly, we remain committed to more than architecture — we are committed to Designing Better Communities.
