The Buddha Belly Plant (Jatropha podagrica) is a quirky, eye-catching tropical succulent native to Central and South America. True to its name, it grows a bumpy, gray trunk that swells out at the bottom like a little belly before narrowing at the top. Beautiful, large green leaves sprout right from the top of this unique trunk, adding to its distinct look.

One of the best parts of the Buddha Belly Plant is its vibrant, orange-red flower clusters that stand tall above the leaves. You will get to enjoy these colorful blooms off and on almost all year round, and they will often keep popping up in the dead of winter even after all the leaves have fallen off. Once the flowers fade, they form oval green seed pods that slowly turn brown. Keep an eye on them because when they get fully ripe, they burst open and literally launch their seeds.
