Wildfire is not a new phenomenon.
But the scale, intensity, and behaviour of today’s fires are increasingly shaped by altered fuel structures and a warming climate.

Ecological research and fire agency data show that:

• Many ecosystems evolved with low-intensity fire regimes
• Suppression policies have contributed to fuel build-up
• Hotter, drier conditions are extending fire seasons
• Fire severity is increasing across multiple regions globally

If we want to reduce risk and support recovery, we must first understand fire as an ecological process, not just an emergency event.
