BioChar - the "trendy" soil-building technology that's actually been around 7,000 years!

Join us Saturday, April 30th for a BioChar Workshop with Tony Saladino, cohosted by Wild Path Collective. Tony will guide us through an overview, demonstration and practice of making and inoculating biochar, a soil amendment that creates thriving and diverse microbial communities for healthy soil. We will teach and practice how to make and process biochar with materials you have on-site or in your area.

Tickets are on a sliding scale of $50-$100 for the day-long class, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Sign up for the workshop (and see more detailed info): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/biochar-climate-chaos-solution-tickets-312094582297

Email Tony at [email protected] for details on scholarships or reduced-priced entry, including a brief description of how you intend to use the knowledge gained from this class.

We've been a bit quiet lately ... because we've been busier than ever, preparing to usher in big shifts in the new year. As you may have heard, come 2022 LSF is transitioning into a new chapter, one that we have eagerly awaited and carefully stewarded for much of the past season: We are welcoming Wild Path Collective to LSF as the land's new stewards and owners!

Wild Path Collective is an intergenerational, multicultural, and interfaith community and non-profit with the intention to support healing for the land and for people who experience systemic and oppressive challenges to land access. Many of LSF's staff members are joining the new collective to continue tending the seeds - of programming, relationships, and perennials - that have been planted at LSF in the last 7 years.

To learn more about how this exciting shift came about, please read our Community Letter here: www.lilyspringsfarm.com/new-chapter

"Both campsites at Lily Springs Farm are gorgeous. The White Pine Meadow spot is tucked back in the woods and completely private. The Lakeside Serenity spot is more open, yet still surrounded by trees, with trails for walking back into the woods."

"We loved the whole experience of camping at Lily Springs. Everything was totally quiet, clean, and safe. It was perfect."

Freddie has a lot to say this morning! This lil dinosaur is the friendliest of our laying hens and can usually be found running excitedly towards her caretakers, foraging in the orchard and woods, or accidentally bumping into things (she's blind in her left eye). πŸ“

This gorgeous black and yellow Argiope made her nest in our elderberry guilds, right above a ground wasp nest. The wasps frequently fly in and out of their nest, and it seems that at least three of them have already gotten caught in her web. Fun fact about this species, the smaller, nomadic males will court females by strumming the strings of her web like a guitar. Who knew spiders were so romantic? πŸ•ΈοΈ

Help us wish a happy birthday to our dear Elle! Elle is a long-time member of the Lily Springs Farm team and currently fulfills the niches of coordinating education and events, as well as popping in to get her hands dirty with some field work when she can. Elle brings joy, curiosity, and an abundance of knowledge to the farm and we are so grateful to have her as part of the team.

What did you think of our DIY CBD chocolate recipe from last week? We hope you'll also enjoy this berry wine recipe using Lily Springs Farm's black currant and aronia berries! Email [email protected] to order blackcurrants and aronia berries!

Sweet Berry Country Wine:

3 lbs Berries (Black Currant, Aronia, or both)
1 Gallon Water
3 lbs Granulated Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon Citric Acid (or Juice of 2 large Lemons)
Wine Yeast
Dried herbs (optional)

Equipment: Bowl, Fermentation container (bucket, jar, primary fermenter or carboy)

Clean hands and equipment thoroughly at each step. In a bowl mash berries using hands or a potato masher and place berries into your fermentation container. Boil water and pour over berries, stirring in sugar and citric acid or lemon juice making sure sugar is fully dissolved. (Get creative by adding dried herbs at this stage) Cover and let sit for 24 hours, then stir in wine yeast. Fit the mixture with a lid or airlock. Fermentation should begin within 24 to 48 hours. Once fermentation is active (bubbles will appear as the yeast begins to consume the sugars, byproduct = alcohol!) open the lid at least twice per day if not using an airlock. Continue until fermentation is complete. Then strain, bottle and enjoy! Best after 6 to 12 months.

Regeneration, Education, Celebration

Lily Springs Farm, nestled in the rolling hills of western Wisconsin, is a 100-acre private reserve comprised of woodland, wetland, open fields, and lake.

We are dedicated to a chemical free landscape utilizing natural farming practices and working with goats to clear the forest. As a farm demonstrating the use of regenerative agriculture, we provide experiences and training for people interested in building a resilient future. Permaculture and whole systems design are being applied to restore our habitats to health and to build a perennial-based farm system that integrates land, people and the built environment. Educational programming flows naturally from that work and from our intention to foster health in ourselves and the land.

Experience the restorative beauty of Lily Springs Farm by attending a volunteer work day, a wedding, a family reunion in our Airbnb, an educational workshop, or one of the many more events hosted on the property throughout the seasons.

Our spring-fed lake boasts many lilies in the summer. The lily β€” or lotus β€” grows out of the mud and, in that spirit, our mission is to provide a sanctuary in the natural world, dedicated to bringing beauty out of murkiness by reconnecting to what is essential and generative.
