Hello friends!

Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you and mess with those who mess with you. Families on earth will be blessed through you. (SMP) (Spencer’s Modern Paraphrase)

2020 has been a wild year when I decided to lay down Restoration institute for a while I settled into a new job. A few weeks ago I felt it was time to open it up again and see if the ministry was still a viable service to God and my neighbors.

Since that decision, Mary and I served in Lake Charles Louisiana doing hurricane relief over a long weekend. Upon return, I learned a faithful co-worker was having car trouble and I knew her car would not last long. Then out of the blue, without seeking it out, 2 cars were donated to me. I began thinking about my co worker and wondered if I should ask her if she is interested in one of them. Then, Boom! I get called into work because I was told her car “blew up.” That was the confirmation I needed. I sent pics of the car and asked her if she was interested. She said she’d been crying and wondering what they were going to do. Katy came and picked up the car and title Sunday night. When asked why I told her that someone had done the same for me.

Monday I got called into work again and I looked forward to asking Katy how the car was running. Katy was late getting in. Katy arrived saying she had asked God for opportunities to serve and give back what she had been given. She said just then she saw a man walking alongside the road near a broken-down car. The conversation went something like this …“Do you need a ride?” “Yeah. Thank you so much. You don’t know how much I needed this.” “Actually, I do.”

God moved very quickly once I prayed to get back into the blessed to be a blessing. God moved quickly to direct Katy once she made a decision to bless also. I’m sure there are thousands out there who agree and have your own story! Once we commit to bless, we get blessed to be a blessing! With all the spin around us, there are plenty of opportunities around us everyday to be a blessing to others.
Do you need a blessing? Simply ask God to make you a blessing. It is fun watching divine coincidences happen. May God abundantly bless you today!

Promo for lake Charles outreach oct 29 – Nov 2
Lake Charles had a population around 72k when Hurricane Laura hit August 28th and tore roofs off. Many had not returned yet when Hurricane Delta, tore off those blue roof tarps and flooded the city again on Oct 10th
For over 30 years, Denny Nissley and Christ In Action has helped moved physical and spiritual debris that people have no idea how to deal with. Christ In Action organizes volunteers from all over the USA to do simple manual work to help the poor get their lives back. CIA has a portable commercial kitchen, showers, and tractor trailers full of tools. You just need to get yourself there.
All I do I show up and start blessing people with hard work and the staff of CIA does the rest. I need help to get there again, and would prefer to bring a team, but I am willing to fly down alone because they made me promise to return and Mary Thury said it was okay.
The service work that Mary and I did Oct 16-19 included removing rubble and saving family heirlooms for families. We separated out family pictures before they were lost forever (I found the last remaining picture of a deceased brother of a former homeowner and returned it and a large toolbox to its owner). We removed rubble to clear a path for heavy machinery to reach heavy jobs. We talked and prayed with families that had lost everything. Others operated chainsaws, power tools, and drove skid steers. But more are needed!
People ask, “Why would you drive that far to serve people you don’t know for nothing?” We respond, “because I know a guy that went further for me. I have a few days off and this is how I choose to spend them. And I admit it, it’s fun.”

Will you travel and serve with me, or send me to the people of Lake Charles? Oct 29-Nov 2, 2020. Pm please

Hello Friends of Restoration Institute! We are continuing to invest in lives spontaneously in the Midwest. I had a great time up in Austin Mn with peeps from Twin Towers. Thank you Joyce and Rick for the invite and a great environment to share in music and a message of Restoration. There have been many small gigs this last month in living rooms, store fronts, and restaurants just popping up. These are often unplanned and just what those involved say just what was needed for a brief moment to bring encouragement and help.
Also, new friends are also showing up at New Hope Community in Oskaloosa. Please pray for my new friends Travis, Tony, and Anna to find the full restoration their hearts long for.
I have been meditating on this verse, “Brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.” I am deliberately focusing and on being thankful and joyful for all the good things I have. A result of that commitment to joy is an encouragement to others as all of our careers, families, and friendships are restored. There are so many good things we can do, but I want to do the best thing that ushers in a unifying and abiding peace for my friends.
Many of you have been very supportive in a time of transition for Mary and I, and it is not without appreciation and it is not going without being a blessing to others as well. Thank you.
If you have any questions or would like to schedule a visit to find out for yourself what I am talking about, please contact me. Also like, share, and get the word out about Restoration Institute!

Hello Friends! There is a two-fold purpose of this post.

First of all, an update and direction for Restoration Institute.
Change is in the air for me, so I am reluctant in posting while trying to figure it out. I have been working doing needed unique jobs for people with others while still working the vision of R.I. and contributing at New Hope Community Center. (see photos of Central College work group and family bring moved) I have been traveling a lot and much of my work has been out of the SE Iowa area. Though much more is happening that I can share here, I am still looking for opportunities to serve your music, church, automotive, painting needs and more. I can often bring a small team along if needed. Wherever you are I can help meet the need in your context.

Secondly, this summer I was nominated and placed as the president of Iowa Quaker Men. Now I have been asked to represent them in Kenya in July. The Quakers have some funds available for the trip but I am raising the remainder. Please keep me and the Thury family in prayer and consider offering a donation to send me to serve and represent in Africa. Donations are tax deductible. If you have any questions about details about the Africa trip or need me to serve your unique needs I would love to hear from you.

I am grateful to all those who believe in Restoration Institute and support the mission of seeing broken souls and broken stuff be restored to the beautiful purpose they were created for.

Blessings!

Let me blog quick about the band …. Banjohornazoo exists as a unique artistic musical element of Restoration Institute in collaboration with many great Churches and faith based groups. The musical outreach speaks to the mission of gathering unique souls to serve for a season and is designed to serve out of the mainstream of culture. Instrumentation consists of banjo, tuba, melodica, and trombone. Risking a scene, people may be pulled into the band whether or not they have ever practiced together. There is often a percussionist or two and a variety of singers. The goal is to create a sense of community whenever and wherever they are play, and long to go the extra mile to include the crowd in the experience. Banjohornazoo presents a unique blend of classic rock, kids songs, jazz standard and hymns to benefit audiences and the community through the development of multi-generational and multicultural events that can reach a wider variety of people in unique places without much notice or sound system.
The core band consists of Spencer Thury (me) Randy MacDonald, Jonathon Schull, Mike Moyer, and a few more friends. A short list of places we have played this last year includes events like Old Threshers, Iowa Yearly Meeting sessions, Christmas in July, Oskaloosa Art center, College Avenue annual Block party, Moulton Jamboree days, Rose hill Community events, and more.
We would love an invite to bring something different to your event!

A year ago I started Restoration Institute and it continues to be a unique ride. I have been picking up wonderful people, vintage projects, and odd jobs. Since I have spent a lifetime becoming a character myself, we all get along pretty well.
While cleaning out an abandoned property with friends, I saw among the abandoned tires, bottles, and tv’s an old “Workman’s Trike” stuck between the trees. After I brought it home I met Justin who was interested in it enough to bring it back to life. We found that though the tires were rotted off, the chain was still good and the gear box was not seized up! Together (he did most of the work) we put tires on it and took it out for a ride down the street. It still needs more TLC to get it road worthy. But it works! Justin is thrilled with a great full time work now and is weekly in meetings.

I founded R.I. with a goal of getting the broken back to work. I continue to find that with a little work and good friends, it does work, and that benefits the whole community.

If you would like to sponsor a project so I can continue to get my hands dirty with friends like Justin, please contact me. Daily I get to support and pray with many people in a time of transition. The projects make those difficult moments a little easier to bear. Please be in prayer for me as I decide which characters and projects need my time and attention the most, and how to develop these friend’s unique potential from God.

This morning we had our second clean up crew at a Rose Hill, Iowa farm. This has actually been a goal since I started Restoration Institute. The vision is to gather a work crew including myself and others from our community, and clean up the area. While working together we will build relationships, trust, skills for a better vocation, and faith in Jesus as the servant leader God. There is something heart warming about launching rocks, sticks, and rusty fence posts out of a bean field while making friends.

This morning we had our second clean up crew at a Rose Hill, Iowa farm. This has actually been a goal since I started Restoration Institute. The vision is to gather a work crew including myself and others from our community, and do rough clean up jobs in the area. While working together we will build relationships, trust, skills for a better vocation, and faith in Jesus as the servant leader God. There is something heart warming about launching rocks, sticks, and rusty fence posts out of a bean field while making friends and getting paid to do it. We can road trip if needed.
