THE ALCHEMY OF HOME HEALTH
What you’re seeing here is not just water damage.
This is what happens when multiple small issues compound into one major failure.
This home had several variables working against it:
Roof metal cut too short, allowing water to overshoot the gutter.
Gutter guards trapping debris instead of protecting the system.
Gutters installed in a way that couldn’t properly drain due to roof pitch and layout.
Only one downspout on a run that physically requires two.
Left side of the roof sitting lower than the right- making proper fall impossible in one direction
So what happens?
Water bypasses the entire system.
And when water wins outside… it finds a way inside.
Now let’s talk about the door.
An exterior door should be completely watertight by design.
It should not matter how much water hits it.
But in this case:
No proper flashing system
No sill pan
Subfloor visible from the exterior
If you can see it… water can reach it.
And it did.
Then we add one more layer:
Deck threshold improperly built, allowing water to sit and collect at the doorway.
This is what I call The Alchemy of Home Health.
Not one issue.
Not two.
But a chain reaction of overlooked details that eventually turn into:
Rot
Structural damage
Interior water intrusion
Expensive repairs
Here’s the part most homeowners don’t get told:
A lot of contractors will come in, replace what’s damaged, make it look good…
and never address the cause.
That’s how problems come back.
On this project, every variable had to be corrected:
Water flow redesigned
Gutter system reconsidered
Structural damage repaired
Door system rebuilt properly
Threshold and transitions corrected
Because if even one of those is ignored…
the problem isn’t fixed. It’s just delayed.
So if you ever get a quote and think:
“Why is this higher than the other guy?”
Ask yourself this:
Are they fixing the problem…
or just covering it up?
Because a real contractor doesn’t just build.
He diagnoses.
He corrects.
He protects the home long-term.
