HopeBUILDERS HopeBUILDERS exists to help our neighbors in Kansas City live in safe, accessible, and healthy homes

As of 2015, more than 10 percent of all people living in the Kansas City region have some type of disability. For those over the age of 65, that rate jumps to 35 percent. While the degrees of disability vary, for many of those individuals who live in our communities, disability equals being a prisoner in his or her home. HopeBUILDERS is honored to be selected as a United Way Impact 100 partner! 🎉

This partnership provides added visibility for our organization, along with unrestricted funding to help us meet our mission of serving older adults and people with disabilities by providing accessibility modifications and minor home repair so they can age safely (and affordably) in place.

There are some projects that stay with you for a lifetime. This particular project is one of those. This two day ramp build brought together seasoned volunteers, first time volunteers and returning volunteers. We also had our friends from Home Depot working right beside our regular volunteers. Our client, Ms. O was pure sunshine. As we finished up her two day ramp build; she greeted us with smiles and reminded us of our why. Community and collaboration are how we can make a difference around the KC Metro. Home starts here; one partnership at a time.

There's a lot to be said about legacy. How it's built, how it's passed down. We were honored to be apart of our clients story. At 91 years old, she's lived in her home for 60 years. She's seen the neighborhood change and watched people come and go. Her children were raised in this neighborhood and the soil is rich in memories. As our clients body aged, her needs changed. Stairs were no longer safe to navigate and she needed a little extra help navigating everyday activities. HopeBUILDERS volunteers were able to build a ramp that would help her move outdoors without fear of falling. New steps for the front and back of the house with a motion detector to make sure that even in the dark, the steps could be seen. New cabinets in the kitchen and new floor laid, making the kitchen a little more cozy. The bathroom got an accessible upgrade: grab bars, shower handheld shower head. Simple upgrades to make our clients home one she can age in place.
