From my very first job I wanted to make photo realistic renderings of the buildings I work on. It is a purely selfish pursuit, but I do feel like it is necessary to convey ideas to nearly all clients. I have been blessed with the ability to visualize space very well to the point that I don't really have a design process, I just think and then draw what's in my head. I realize that is not usual and also that the 2D paper drawings used for construction do not help people visualize their project at all. I was surprised to find a rendering of the St. Johns salt storage shed. That was an educational engineering experience but apparently, I will make a rendering of anything.

The thing that they don't tell you about architecture is that it is primarily a service industry. The hype is that you get to be a freewheeling artist that works with bricks and boards, but the truth is that clients, budgets, and contractors more often determine the quality of the finished product.
These two projects shown are two of the many that really came out as intended. The first one if the Goodrich high school auditorium and the second was a Firstbank in Dewitt but it is something else now. Very happy with how they worked out.

Most people don't know that I was a computer programmer prior to going to Architecture school. I graduated high school in 1986, just at the time when the PC was taking over. In architecture school I did all my drawings by hand, pen on paper, because I knew that once I got into the work world, I would never get to do it again. Of course, the changes in technology suited me fine. I still enjoy the fast pace of change. The construction industry, however, is still stuck in slow motion in many ways. The tools that we use are so advanced that we are in danger of making ourselves obsolete. This rendering of what was the First bank in Dewitt was high tech at the time. Now it looks cartoonish to my eye. I need to improve a little myself in this area. This year I have made the effort to switch over to free software in nearly all areas to keep my costs down. I will mention some of those programs when I get to talking about my workflow.

The best thing about being an architect is that people will come to you with really crazy ideas, and you get to figure them out. In the middle of the Saginaw childrens zoo was a leaky concrete pond. They wanted to build an underwater exhibit where kids could walk down under the water and see the ecosystem there. The plan was to sink an exceptionally large concrete box into the pond. The problem is that empty, watertight boxes like to float. The solution was to anchor the box to even more concrete at the bottom of the pond. The math told me that we had to have a weight equal to the weight of the water displaced and we were displacing more than 20,000 gallons of water. Water is about eight pounds a gallon so 160,000 pounds of concrete were brought in. It turned out amazing though.

I have been trying to get my computer files more organized as I work on new projects. Looking at all the photos and renderings I suddenly felt the urge to share some of the projects that I have worked on in the past 25 years of doing this. I have completed well over 400 buildings in that time, and I don't think most people have any idea about that. I will try to tell some good stories and give some industry insight as I go.

If you have been to LCC you have probably seen this big glass wall. Just out of school I worked for the company Hobbs & Black in Lansing. Along with another young lad we put together the drawings for this building. I learned a lot on a project of this size, including how to trust your instincts. One of my favorite engineering stories comes from this project. I may even tell it here someday.
