The common lilac is long lived and noted for it's mid to late spring blooms of large conical clusters of very fragrant white to purple flowers. It attracts both butterflies and hummingbirds. Gold Mound Spirea. Yellow to gold leaves cover the mounded plant in spring, becoming more greenish yellow in summer and turning bright orange in fall. Smaller size makes it great for patio or sidewalk borders. $5.97 at Rick's Nursery.

East Indian Lemongrass! This plant lends a lemony aroma and flavor to soups, teas and other beverages. There are over 50 different species of lemongrass (not all are edible). Produces tall purple seed heads and makes an attractive border or hedge plant. Grows in clumps and is suitable for container growing. Also used on slopes for erosion control.
