Valley Girls Book Club read for May. James by Percival Everett. It makes me want to read Huckleberry Finn again. An interesting take on the story shown through Jim’s eyes - Much like Beowulf and Grendel. My issue with the book was the idea of code talking between the enslaved. It goes on the assumption that all enslaved Black people could understand one another. Which is not true. Harriet Tubman, who grew up in Maryland had a difficult time understanding the Gullah Geechee in South Carolina. Blacks from all over Africa were enslaved & brought to North America, and they all had their own dialects, their own language. To gloss over the fact that they could easily understand one another is bothersome. It was enjoyable, so if you’re just reading it for a different perspective on Huckleberry Finn - have fun.
