It’s Earth Day!
I have always had an appreciation for nature. We did a lot of hiking and camping as a family when I was growing up. My mom was always out in the flower gardens.
Being a steward of my little section of land has therefore been a priority for me as I’ve grown the farm.
I use as many ecosystem friendly practices as I can. I don’t use any herbicides and the only pesticide I use is beer for the slugs when they get a little out of hand 😅
I’ve found that there will be pests and issues, but that nature usually balances out. When aphids are multiplying out of control, after not too much time the lady bugs 🐞 will show up to take care of business.
A few things you can do to help your local ecosystem this earth day:
1.Plant something the pollinators can eat. Are native plants best? Probably. But as long as it’s not an invasive plant, plant something. Butterflies love zinnias.
2. Set up a bird bath or a small dish with stones. This allows the birds, squirrels and bees to get a drink of water.
3. Go outside and just enjoy nature.
4. If you want to do something a little more time intensive, start a compost pile or see how you can contribute to a local compost community. Food waste is a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. And returning those nutrients to the soil is a much better option than them sitting in a landfill.
