Found an old video from 2009 of my son Zach helping me install a faucet when he was 6 years old.

Today he's 22 and works alongside me at Water Heating Experts installing and servicing water heaters throughout Palm Beach County.

The years go by fast. I'm glad I kept this video. ❤️🔧

Back in 2009, my son Zachary was just 6 years old and wanted to help Dad install a faucet. At the time, neither of us knew that one day he would be working a...

This surprises a lot of homeowners, but in some cases a water softener can actually cause a water heater to fail sooner.

Here's why:

Water softeners remove calcium and magnesium from the water and replace them with sodium. While this helps prevent scale buildup on fixtures and appliances, softened water can be more aggressive inside certain water heaters.

One of the biggest issues we see is with the anode rod. The anode rod is designed to sacrifice itself to protect the steel tank from rusting. In homes with softened water, the anode rod often gets consumed much faster than normal.

What can happen?

• The anode rod wears out early
• The tank loses corrosion protection
• Rust develops inside the water heater
• The water heater fails years sooner than expected

If you have a water softener, here are a few recommendations:

✅ Check the anode rod every 2–3 years

✅ Flush the water heater regularly

✅ Consider upgrading to a powered anode rod if appropriate

✅ Make sure the softener is adjusted correctly and not over-softening the water

We've seen some water heaters on softened water last 20+ years with proper maintenance, while others fail much earlier because the anode rod was never checked.

A water softener can be great for your plumbing system, but it may also increase the importance of water heater maintenance.

Do you have a water softener? How old is your water heater?

Before You Hire a Contractor in Florida, Check More Than Just the License

Most homeowners know they should verify a contractor's license. Unfortunately, many stop there.

A license number alone doesn't tell the whole story.

When researching a contractor, take a few extra minutes to learn who actually holds the license and how they are connected to the company.

Here are a few things to check:

✅ Is the license active?

✅ Who is the qualifying agent (license holder)?

✅ Is that person an owner, officer, or employee of the company?

✅ Are they actively involved in supervising the work?

✅ Has the license holder had any disciplinary actions or complaints?

✅ Does the company carry proper insurance?

In Florida, many contracting businesses operate under a qualifying agent. While this is legal when done correctly, homeowners should understand who is ultimately responsible for the work being performed.

A good contractor should have no problem explaining:

• Who holds the license

• Their role in the company

• How the work is supervised

• Whether permits will be pulled under that license

You can verify Florida contractor licenses at:

The lowest price is not always the best value. Taking a few minutes to verify a contractor's credentials can help you avoid costly problems later.

Water heaters really don’t last like they used to.This tank was installed in March 1979 — and it just got replaced after 47 years of service. We’ve even pulled out original units from 1968 that were still working when we removed them. Compare that to a lot of the big-box store water heaters we see getting installed these days… way too many are failing in just 5 years or less. It’s disappointing how much quality has dropped over the years. When it’s time to replace your water heater, we still install reliable, high-quality tanks that are built to last — not the cheap ones that fail quickly. Please use a licensed plumber to install your water heater. Water heaters dangers include carbon monoxide, flames, electricity and water. They should not be installed by handymen, or just some guy that "can do it". I'm licensed and I have only been asked to prove my license twice in the last 9 years. Please check and make sure they have all licenses and insurance. https://www.denver7.com/news/eastern-plains/investigators-identify-the-likely-cause-of-a-deadly-house-explosion-in-pueblo-county

Dual A.O. Smith water heaters replaced with new A.O. Smith water heaters. The original heaters were 20 years old and still going strong. However, the homeowner wanted to be proactive and replace them. Also, many insurance companies will not insure water heaters older than 15 years old. Contact us if you want A.O. Smith water heaters installed by a master plumber with over 30 years experience.
