When we originally designed this wet bar for a La Quinta home, the directive was clear: it sits directly in the entry, and we didn’t want it to feel like an “ode to alcohol” (my dear and witty client’s words) - or a hotel lobby bar.
So we kept it restrained.
But as the home evolved and we introduced more art and decorative pieces, something became clear: we were adding things to an area that didn’t need more things.
It needed more architecture. Better scale.
So we stopped decorating around it - and I went back to the architecture.
We’re now extending the original design, refining its proportions, and giving it more presence without losing the restraint that made the original concept work.
That’s one of the things I love about design. You can draw it, measure it, plan it, and build it - but eventually, you have to live with it. And sometimes a space tells you what it needs next.
Sometimes good design isn’t about adding another beautiful object.
It’s knowing when to stop decorating - and change the architecture.
