One of the most common questions we hear is:

"Which soil should I use?"

The answer depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

🌱 Screened Topsoil is a great choice for grading, filling low spots, and preparing areas for new lawns.

🥕 Compost is designed for planting vegetables, flowers, and raised beds where healthy plant growth is the goal.

Using the right material from the start can make all the difference in the success of your project.

If you're not sure which product is best, just ask! We'll help point you in the right direction.

Tell us about your project or stop by the yard—we're happy to help you choose the right material.

September is one of the busiest months for outdoor projects in Western New York—and before you know it, cooler temperatures will be here to stay.

If you're looking to get ahead, here's a simple checklist to keep your yard in great shape before fall really settles in:

âś… Refresh mulch around trees and landscape beds
âś… Add compost to vegetable gardens after harvesting
âś… Finish grading and fill low spots before wet weather arrives
âś… Plant trees and shrubs while the soil is still warm
âś… Schedule material deliveries before the fall rush

A little planning now can save you time—and help set your property up for success next spring.

What's at the top of your September to-do list? Let us know in the comments!

This load of screened topsoil is one of those deliveries.

No matter where it's going, our goal is the same: provide quality materials and dependable service every step of the way.

Healthy soil isn't just about nutrients.

Good soil also has space for air and water to move through it. That balance helps roots grow deeper and stronger. According to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Soil Health Principles, maintaining good soil structure and pore space is key to supporting healthy plant growth and improving water and air movement in the soil.

Adding organic matter over time can improve soil structure, especially in compacted soils.

Building better soil is a long-term investment that pays off season after season.

The answer to yesterday's challenge is... Compost!

Thanks to everyone who took a guess!

If you said compost, you were right. Finished compost has a dark, crumbly texture and an earthy smell. It's one of the best ways to add organic matter to your soil, helping improve soil structure, moisture retention, and overall soil health over time.

Whether you're refreshing garden beds now or getting ready for fall planting, compost is a great addition to many projects.

Customer Question: "Can I start preparing new garden beds now for next spring?"

Absolutely.

Late summer and early fall are excellent times to improve soil. Adding compost now gives organic matter time to become incorporated before next year's growing season.

Many successful gardens begin with preparation months before planting.

Thinking ahead? We'd be happy to help you plan your project.

As temperatures begin to cool and rainfall becomes more consistent, grass seed has an easier time becoming established than it does during the hottest part of summer. Penn State Extension notes that late summer and early fall are among the most effective windows for lawn renovation because soil conditions are still warm while air temperatures begin to moderate—creating ideal germination conditions.

Planning now can help you be ready when those ideal seeding conditions arrive.

If lawn repair is on your fall to-do list, start planning your materials now.
