Why do drywall seams crack? Cracks that run along high stress areas of door and window headers or ceilings with long open spans may be a result of the building settling. Extensive cracking especially in areas that are not high stress points may indicate that there was some delinquency on the part of the drywall hangers or tapers.

When can you paint plaster? You will need to let plaster dry completely before painting. You will know when its dry when it changes color and feels dry to the touch. Depending on the air temperature and humidity, this can take a few days to a week. To finish i just paint over the plaster with one or two coats of high-quality paint. Use a thicker roller to get into the grooves of the plaster.

How quickly do you have to work joint compound ? Joint compound remains workable for an hour or more so you can experiment with different looks.once it is allowed to dry you can still go over it with more plaster if you dont like it.
If you can't finish the project you can stop and finish later, just wrap up the joint compound to keep it from drying out.

How to hand plaster walls to cover wall paper.
1st Scrape off any loose wallpaper get it wet with spongue first. Whatever sticks on the wall and can't be easily scraped off can just be plasteted over. 2nd put some joint compound on a plastering tray. 3rd take about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of plastered on your plaster knife. 4th start an edge of the wall and hold the knife with the plaster against the wall at about 45 degree angle. 5th. Pull the knife toward you and smear the plaster on the wall, you will want to press down so that you leave about a 1/4 of an inch of plaster. 6th pick up the knife and pull it across the plaster again in another direction. 7th continue to pull the plastered on the wall and then smooth it in different directions. 7th after you've finished a 2' by 2' section, look at it and lightly swiped across any parts that dont look the way you want.
