I spent my first ten years of gardening scrubbing my vegetable beds clean every October, leaving nothing but bare, tidy dirt for the winter. I thought I was being a diligent gardener. In reality, I was setting myself up for a miserable spring full of weeds and rock-hard soil. Nature never leaves the ground naked. These days, I do a lot less work in the autumn and get much better harvests in the summer. There's one simple step you should be taking before the hard frost hits—using materials you probably already have lying around the yard—that acts like a heavy winter coat for your soil. Put the garden to bed properly now, and let it do the hard work for you while you stay inside where it's warm.
