: In 1903 the Santa Fe Railroad completed its line through the western reaches of the Osage Reservation connecting Kaw City to Ralston. Following the Salt Creek Valley, this new route bypassed the nearby community of Gray Horse.

Recognizing the opportunities a railroad stop could bring, Gray Horse merchant Lew A. Wismeyer (AKA the "father of Fairfax") persuaded the railroad to build one and leased the surrounding area from the Osage Nation. Wismeyer dubbed the stop "Fairfax" after a Washington, D.C. hotel where he and his wife had stayed, and soon the entire town had adopted this name.

This historic photograph captures a steam locomotive arriving at the Fairfax Santa Fe depot during the town’s heyday as a bustling transportation hub, when trains carried oil, cattle, agricultural products, and passengers across the plains. Visit Osage County to see some of the stories, landmarks and cultural treasures that still attest to this remarkable chapter of Oklahoma history.
