What if I told you these pitchers are from the same Nepenthes plant?
Nepenthes produce two different types of pitchers throughout their lives: lower pitchers and upper pitchers. Lower pitchers form near the base of the plant and are often larger, rounder, and more colorful. These pitchers are designed to catch crawling insects like ants and beetles.
As the plant matures and begins to climb, it starts producing upper pitchers. These are typically smaller, more elongated, and can have completely different colors and markings. Upper pitchers are adapted to attract and capture flying insects such as flies and wasps.
The differences in shape, size, and color arenāt randomātheyāre specialized adaptations that help the plant take advantage of different food sources as it grows through its environment.
This is one of the most fascinating things about Nepenthes for us. With a little patience and care, you can watch a single plant transform and produce pitchers so dramatically different that they look like they came from two separate species.
