The tool matters as much as the cut. Each blade type compresses, slices, and heals differently — and using the wrong one on the wrong wood is where most pruning damage starts.

🌿 Four tools matched to the wood they're built for:

- Bypass pruners — for roses, fruit trees, and anything with live, green wood. The blades pass each other like scissors, leaving a clean edge that heals fast. Using anvil pruners on live wood crushes the stem instead of cutting it — and crushed tissue is where disease starts

- Anvil pruners — for dead branches, dried stalks, and woody brush. The blade comes down onto a flat surface, which gives enough force to cut through hard, dead material that would jam or twist a bypass blade. Wrong tool for live wood, right tool for cleanup

- Micro-tip snips — for herbs, flowers, and delicate vegetables. The narrow pointed blades fit into tight clusters so you can harvest one basil stem or deadhead a zinnia without damaging the buds forming right next to it

- Bypass loppers — for thick limbs, overgrown lilacs, and mature hydrangea wood. The long handles give you leverage to cut cleanly through branches thicker than your thumb without tearing the bark. If the lopper won't finish the cut, step up to a saw — don't twist

🌱 The habits that prevent most pruning problems:

- Clean the blades with rubbing alcohol when moving between plants — sap can carry fungal spores from one plant to the next without any visible sign
- Sharpen once a season — dull blades tear bark instead of cutting it, and torn bark is the entry point for pests and disease
- Make every cut just above an outward-facing bud or branch collar — the direction of the nearest bud determines where the new growth goes
